Learning across Torrens

Torrens 2021

LNPS Team Points and Torrens Gaining Your Wings

To foster a community where everyone belongs and feels connected.

To create a caring climate, which reflects our school values:

Honesty, Respect, Care and Concern and Pursuit of Excellence

In collaboration with LNPS Team Points, Torrens students will be given the opportunity to 'gain their wings' by providing evidence of their commitment to our school values. This process is similar to the Seniors High Flyer awards, albeit on a much smaller scale.

Students will need to provide evidence in the form of signed statements, photos, videos that show them living the school values of HONESTY, CARE & CONCERN, PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE and RESPECT. As well as the Keys to Success of ORGANISATION, PERSISTENCE, CONFIDENCE, RESILIENCE & GETTING ALONG.

Examples of upholding our LNPS Values:

Be polite and respectful to all - always greet and treat people in a positive manner

Be respectful to the environment - litter, toilet areas, learning areas inside buildings, outside learning spaces, on excursions…etc.

Show genuine care and concern for all - stand up for what is right - support people who are not feeling well, are injured, or who you know are having a tough time

Have the drive and determination to be successful.

Be honest even when it might get you in trouble!

Show good sportsmanship - cheer everyone on!

Think about and act to support people in our community

Demonstrate bravery - make your voice heard, make a stand against bullying and anti-social behaviour in the real and online worlds.

Students have been provided with a folder to store certificates they have been awarded. Team Points will be awarded for each act.

Mathematics

The focus for Mathematics in Term 3 will be centred on MASS / WEIGHT.

There will be many hands-on learning experiences for all students as well as workshops focusing on specific skills and strategies. Students will be encouraged to take risks, make many learning attempts and demonstrate their understanding at all times.

In Term 4, the focus will be on developing their understanding of graphing, money, time, data and statistics.

Number Facts

Students will continue to practise number facts at every opportunity as knowing these facts with fluency and automaticity is required in all areas of mathematics. In addition, they will be building up and using their fluency with multiplication facts to learn division facts.

It is essential students have a good working knowledge of addition and subtraction facts to 20 and develop strategies to work with larger numbers.

English

This semester, the essential skills of reading comprehension will continue to be a focus during English.  These skills will be developed through Literature Circles, Class Novel, CARS & STARS, reading conferences and goal setting.

Students are expected to read nightly as part of their homework as this enables them to apply and consolidate skills learnt at school.

Ms Brook will continue to use the InitiaLit Program to teach all aspects of the English Curriculum.

This Semester students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the language and structural features of Explanation Texts, Observational Recounts and Reviews.

Words Their Way

Spelling workshops are targeted to student needs and focus on understanding spelling generalisations. Through workshop learning activities, students will discover new spelling rules with the expectation that students will transfer these skills into their everyday writing.

HASS

Geography

Year 2 - We will develop students’ understanding of place, space, environment and interconnection. Students develop a mental map of the world by learning the major geographical divisions on Earth (place, space, environment) and where they are located in relation to Australia (space). They see how places have meaning to people and the connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have with Country/Place (place, environment, interconnection).

Year 3 - Students will draw on their growing experience of their community and beyond. They will use information sources and observations to develop understandings about Geography and Civics and Citizenship.

Year 4 - Students will describe the location of selected countries using compass direction. They will describe and compare the characteristics of places in different locations. They will identify the interconnections between components of the environment and between people and the environment. Students will recognise the importance of the environment and identify different possible responses to a geographical challenge.
