Book Week 2021, is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books and reading in our lives.  The Children’s Council of Australia has been celebrating Book Week since 1945, with the first awards in 1946. The annual CBCA Book of the Year Awards aim to:

  • promote quality literature for young Australians;
  • support and encourage a wide range of Australian writers and illustrators of children’s books and;
  • celebrate contributions to Australian children’s literature.

It is highly likely that you remember Book Week from your school days.  At Lockleys North Primary School, we value books and reading and know that the volume and variety of texts our children read, greatly impacts their levels of reading comprehension.  Reading comprehension is directly linked to academic success and thus increasing our students’ ability to comprehend text is a main goal of ours.

So how can we go about accessing many varied, engaging texts for our children to enjoy at home?  Book Week is a great time to visit a local bookshop for your child to choose a new book from the nominated list of books.

I have a parcel of nominated picture books wrapped in brown paper and tied up with string,  to send to a family of three children in lock down in Melbourne, along with some Haighs chocolates!  My choices are:

Busy Beaks by author Sarah Allen published by Affirm Press

How to Make a Bird  illustrated by Matt Ottley (text by Meg McKinlay) Walker Books Australia

Book Week 2021, will be celebrated during Weeks 5 and 6.  On Wednesday the 18th of August ‘Perform Education’ will present two performances in the gym.  Invoices have been distributed for the performance which will cost $7:00 per student.  Please ensure payment is made by the 18th of August

On Wednesday,  25th August beginning at 9:00 am, the Book Week Parade will be held in the Gym.  Please note that this is a dress up parade based on a book of choice.  Be creative and put together a costume with your child from found items,  it does not need to be a commercial costume.  Due to COVID Guidelines and restrictions, parents/caregivers/family members will not be able to attend.  Due to this, we will be utilising Zoom to stream the event.

On Thursday, 26th August from 1:45- 3:00 pm, the Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds electives will take place across the school.  Students will choose one activity from a creative selection of electives and participate in cross age R-7 groups during the afternoon.

Looking forward to celebrating a successful Book Week.  If you have any questions regarding the Book Week 2021 plans please contact me via email.
