Grade 5 Snapshot-Term 3

Week 2 & 3

Writing

In writing this week, students have been focusing on the writing process, by writing information reports on a chosen country.

The Writing Process:

Pre Write stage-  Students brainstormed what they knew about their chosen country and created a mind map.

Planning- Students researched, using multiple websites and videos, summarising the information as the went. They used dot points to record this information under each of their sub headings.

Drafting- Students created paragraphs from their dot points and they also added an introduction and conclusion.

Revising- After a mini lesson about revising, students went through their draft carefully. They added, removed, moved and substituted words and sentences to improve their piece.

Editing- Students then edited their report to correct spelling, grammar and punctuation.

On Monday, students will Publish their information reports. Adding all their revisions and edits and typing it up carefully. They can add pictures also.

Students will then move on to the another information report, this time focusing on a different audience and for a different purpose.

Reading

In reading this week students have been using the Comprehension Strategy - Summarising. They have revisited the Read, Cover, Remember and Retell technique. Practising this both in a written summary and a verbal summary using an Information Report.

Next week, they will continue to develop their understanding of a Non-Fiction text by monitoring the meaning of the text and skimming and scanning for important information.

Maths

This week in maths, students have been learning about money and budgeting. They have been working hard and have created budgets for a range of reasons, including planning a family camp trip and budgeting for a pet. These budgets have developed students understanding of adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. Next week, we will begin our unit on fractions. Students will learn about fractions and decimals through real-world, open-ended tasks.

Inquiry

This term students have begun working on our new unit of inquiry, ‘How We Organise Ourselves’. Students will be learning about the responsibility we have as (consumers) when making financial decisions. Students will be working towards creating their own product as part of Market Day, later in the term.

Last week we began looking at the factors that influence consumers when shopping.  Some of these included, price, quality, brand, environment and ethics.

This week students chose an everyday shopping item from home and researched a number of questions related to the factors above. This was presented to the class during our online meets. On Wednesday and Thursday this week, they have planned and produced a short advertisement for their product.
