What's happening in the classrooms

The P/1 students have started off the semester by launching into their learning! Week 2 saw us make a return to our online classrooms, but this has not deterred the students from showing great engagement and making gains in their subject areas.

In Mathematics, the students explored Place Value and represented numbers using sticks and bundles. Many students extended themselves by representing numbers up to 1000! We also continued practising counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. The bundles were used when counting by 10s so that students could understand the relationship between numbers and quantities. Year 1 students then began partitioning 2 digit numbers into tens and ones, to prepare themselves for our Addition unit. The Prep students broke up quantities into smaller parts to show addition, such as 4 + 3 = 7 and 2 + 5 = 7.

In English, the P/1 students have been learning all about procedure writing. They have been exploring the parts of a procedure: “How to Make a Jam Sandwich.” In doing so, the students have been learning about different words such as nouns and action verbs. The students have also been practising their reading daily, including blending sounds to read words. We have learnt about graphs (single letters representing one sound) and digraphs (two letters representing one sound). Students read and wrote words using the CK, SH and CH digraphs. They also ordered, read and wrote down sentences using those sounds.

In Religious Education and Inquiry, the P/1 students have been learning about systems. We have asked ourselves: How are we a system of solidarity? The students have been seeing, thinking and wondering about different images of people helping one another and of Jesus’ teachings. They have also been asking questions about images of different kinds of systems, such as the solar system and human body system, before starting to focus on the weather system. I look forward to seeing where our explorations lead us next!
