Pastoral Care
Students at the Port of Bourke on the Red Dirt Immersion
While our first week of Online Flexible Learning has been a largely positive experience for most students, families and staff, there are actions that can be applied to ensure that the quality of our learning and wellbeing outcomes are optimised.
These include:
If you are feeling overwhelmed by the learning expectations or load, make sure you let your teachers and support network know. Often by taking a step back, prioritising and enacting a plan of attack, even challenging tasks can become manageable.
Exercise, nutrition and rest are important components of a healthy balanced lifestyle along with learning and we need to prioritise opportunities for each, along with social interaction and empathy for others.
It is pleasing to see the manner in which Year 12 are getting along with their lessons in preparation for the HSC and, as appropriate, students from Music, Drama, Art, Woodwork and Design & Technology are safely finalising their Major Works with the support of their teachers.
Our Year 11 cohort are soon to begin their tenure as Leaders of the College and are responsibly preparing and making application for that privilege in support of Year 12 as they approach their Preliminary Exams at the end of this Term.
Year 10 students met Mr Pawlak at their online form meeting today and among other matters celebrated the emerging leadership qualities of some of their cohort on the Red Dirt Immersion to rural and remote NSW just prior to the lockdown.
Year 9 students similarly have been engaged with productive online learning over the week and must be commended on the work they have submitted as evidence of their learning. They similarly met online for a Pastoral Care form meeting today. Pleasingly, four of their cohort: Patrick Frost, Michael Krizan, Jose Monk and Quinton Crispe were our youngest “Ambassadors for Reconciliation” on the Red Dirt Immersion with Mr Stollery.
Under Mr Virgona’s guidance Year 8 have been using the CANVAS Learning Management System to upload evidence of their learning portfolios including evidence of their practical work in subjects including PDHPE.
Year 7 have adjusted to both the challenges of high school, and to an online flexible learning timetable, this semester. Their form meeting with Mr Steinman last Friday was attended by Mr Couani who commended the group on their positive learning and interaction across the cohort.
Our Junior School students are charging ahead with online learning through the dedicated efforts of their teachers and students. Even Thursday Sport went ahead last week with students such as Leon Fazzari of 6 Green taking his dad out for a bike ride a la Tour de France, and Marcus Cicero of 5 Gold who ran with his mum, Jenny, to the park.
In all cases it is important to maintain our avenues of effective communication and support, to empower each other to have the efficacy to reach out and ask if you have any questions or concerns. As a learning and faith community we must ensure that all are included in the conversation, and make the extra effort to take care of, and encourage one another. There are support networks available. Reaching out with concern and care for one another is the first step. Please contact us if you have any concerns.
Let’s be there for one another!
Fide et Labore
St Pius X College acknowledges our First Nations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and particularly the Cammeraygal people,
whose interconnection with this land sustained and
fulfilled them mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually,
over thousands of years.
May we learn from their wisdom.
