Digital Safety and STEM

@ St Louis

This week, in our digital safety news, we'd like to share another excellent Melbourne-based education organisation, Cyber Safety Project.

Their website contains loads of helpful hints and resources that can be used in schools and also by families at home. It also has a blog with relevant posts and articles about apps and games we know our students use to remain connected and socialise with their friends, particularly during a lockdown.

We know one of the most popular of these is Roblox. Rarely does a day go by at St Louis without one of our children making reference to this free-roaming, maker-style app/game and why they love it so much.

As with many of the games that are popular, Roblox presents opportunities for players to interact, socialise, and collaborate. There are so many positives that can come from these opportunities however it's important to remain informed about what the risks or concerns might be. This article (A Parents Guide to Roblox), created by the team at Cyber Safety Project, provides parents with a broader insight into what the game is all about as well as suggesting such things as conversation starters to help families have discussions about how it might be being used.

As we learnt about during our Parent Information Session with the folks at Inform and Empower, being able to talk about why something appeals to our children and listening to their experience of it is a great way to start building boundaries together.

We hope you find it informative and helpful. Please feel free to share any other helpful resources or articles you find connected to digital safety by emailing twood@stlouisaspendale.com

It's been amazing to see how our children have been interacting with STEM during lockdown. We wanted to share just one example of the amazing work they've have created.

The focus of this learning was the Paralympic Values of 'Courage, Determination, Inspiration, and Equality. One member of 5AI chose to focus on Determination. We hope you enjoy it!
