Last Saturday, 12 June was World Day Against Child Labour. With 2021 being the International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour, and with the COVID-19 crisis further threatening to reverse years of progress in tackling the problem, the SJE Justice Team felt the need to raise awareness of this day and issue.

This coming Friday 18 June 2021 will be World Day Against Child Labour Awareness Day at school, with activities planned and run by our Justice Team at recess. We have taken our lead from ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against the Trafficking of Humans) and are asking all of our community (students, staff, families and friends) to mark our support of his day by joining us in the simple actions of:

  • making slavery free choices when you purchase chocolate, tea, coffee, sports equipment, garments and electronic goods;
  • talking to your family and friends encouraging them to make slavery-free choices;
  • helping to raise awareness about this issue by posting your commitment on social media using the hashtag #EndChildLabour2021. LOOK OUT FOR THIS HASHTAG ACROSS OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS ON FRIDAY AND PLEASE LIKE, SHARE, REPOST!

Did You Know:

  • The number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years. This means that almost one in ten of all children worldwide are in child labour.
  • The agriculture sector accounts for 70% of children in child labour, followed by 20% in services and 10% in industry.
  • Child labour is more prevalent among boys than girls at every age but when 21 hours per week of household chores are taken into account, the gender gap in child labour narrows.
  • Child labour in rural areas stands at 14%, nearly three times higher than the 5% in urban areas.

Child labour is work that deprives children of their dignity, their childhood and their right to an education.  Join us to advocate against the practice of child labour.
