Pastoral Care and Wellbeing
An essential tool in the parenting toolbox is encouraging your child’s own natural ability to cope and manage.
As challenging as it may feel to implement; giving children the opportunity to sit with their uncomfortable feelings, do their own problem solving, fixing and/or distracting assists children to build their resilience, confidence as well as understand and then solve their problems.
It’s hard for any parent to resist the very real temptation to jump in and take away their child’s discomfort so that they feel happy and comfortable again but encouraging and helping children to build these skills is worth it. These skills are invaluable for the rest of their lives!
This isn’t to say children should be left on their own without support, but it’s helpful to first provide some space for them to help themselves. It’s about empowering them to understand that they have the ultimate choice in how they feel and respond.
