What we have been up to..

Di Restoran Malayan Orchid

On Friday November 16,  students from the year 9 Indonesian classes, travelled to Bendigo to enjoy an Indonesian banquet at the Malayan Orchid Restaurant. Students although hesitant at first, devoured a banquet of Nasi Goreng (Fried rice), Sop Ayam (Chicken soup), Sate Daging (Beef satay), Ayam Kecap Manis (Sweet soy Chicken) and Es Krim dengan saus coklat panas (ice cream with hot chocolate sauce). Many students experienced sambal (hot chilli sauce) for the first time and soon became aware that only a little is needed to spice up your meal!

All students enjoyed the day and the experience of trying some traditional Indonesian dishes. Makanan ini lezat sekali! (This food was very delicious)

Year 9 French

Our  year 9 French class went on an amazing food trail in Melbourne. We visited a bakery called Laurent  and it had some very perfect and delicious looking French cakes and pastries. We then visited the Vic Market where there was an abundance of fre4nch food at reasonable prices, next was the creperie called La Petite Crêperie, though it the crepe I ordered looked to perfect I didn’t want to ruin it by eating it. Overall we had a great day and I would like to do it again in the future and I recommend going to any other French students who get the opportunity.

String Orchestra

On Friday November 9th, CSC's String Orchestra and string teachers ran a music incursion for Castlemaine Primary School. First up on the program was Mascagni's Intermezzo for strings. Before playing this work, we introduced the primary students to the various instruments and sections of the orchestra. We then examined the work's key features, including identifying the melody and the accompanying motifs, the featured rhythms and the various instrumental techniques utilised (such as pizzicato). This allowed for a deeper and more engaged listening experience for the primary students when we performed the work through in its entirety.

We then performed two movements of the Telemann Viola Concerto in G, a baroque work, which allowed the  students an insight into concerto form and the role of soloists, the accompanying role of the orchestra and the interplay between the two. Our soloists, Rilke and Palmira, had grappled with the challenges of these works in their preparation, and presented musically convincing performances.

Ezra and Alex then performed a feisty "Pillow Dance" duet from Bartok's 44 duos, an evocative piece which no doubt had the kids conjuring up images of wild pillow fights. This was followed by the whole orchestra's performance of Peter Warlock's 'Mattachins" from the Capriol Suite. This dramatic work really captured the children's attention and allowed for some demonstration and discussion of dissonance, and extreme dynamic levels.

Many thanks to the CSC string students for their work at this event! The feedback from CPS staff was extremely positive and we look forward to returning for another incursion in 2019.
