FARMING CAMP!

On the 12th of November our Year 9 class went on Farming Camp. We left at 9am. and arrived at Gellibrand Camping grounds at 2:30pm. After setting up our tents we went swimming in an extremely interesting pool. We had a scrumptious dinner of tofu and rice. On Tuesday we went to the Otway Fly, and walked the Tree Top Walk, some of us went zip-lining, with a couple of legendary instructors. We then went to Triplet Falls, a very lovely walk through thick rainforest amongst towering Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus Regnans), the tallest flowering plant in the world. On Tuesday night we had an amazing dinner of pasta. On Wednesday we had a tour of Paul’s biodynamic dairy farm where we saw his cows and his adorable doggy called Casper. We then went to Johannna beach where we walked to Cannonball Cove after sprinting down a cliff, being pursued by swarms of leeches. On Thursday we went to Ken and Judie Forrester’s herb nursery. We had a tour of their beautiful biodynamic nursery and had a delicious shared lunch of wraps and fruit. We then helped them weed and mix and spread 500. Afterwards, we went to Steph’s house in Apollo Bay, where we made wonderful pizzas and had an entertaining music performance. On Friday, which was our final day, we left Gellibrand and made our slow and exhausting way home, stopping only in Colac and then Ballarat where we had some truly unappetising chips. It was a very fun camp and an amazing experience!

SOCIAL ENTERPRISE PROJECT

Year 10 and 11 Foods students continue to work on the YMCA Social Enterprise Launchpad Project following a workshop with businessman Dennis Barnett from AFS & Associates Chartered Accountants, Bendigo.

Their project involves planning the set-up of a social enterprise business where they would make and deliver delicious, healthy lunches to customers in local workplaces, providing themselves with work experience opportunities and aiming to raise money for their chosen charity, Mary's Meals.  During the workshop students completed a SWOT analysis, started to draft a Business Plan and worked on logo designs for their social enterprise idea: "Lunches with Love".  In Foods classes the students have been creating a range of different recipes that could be delivered to customers.  Students have enjoyed the Launchpad Project and gained a valuable insight into setting up a social enterprise business.

Music Recital Nights

We have had a wonderful series of Recital Nights recently, starting with 9P and 9S combined, 8P and 7P. The Performers Precinct Gym and Drama Room were used for all performances and the space worked well acoustically for bands especially. All students and instrumental teachers worked hard towards the performances which consisted of solos, duos, trios and larger ensembles on show, including string groups, jazz bands, percussion ensembles and best of all, many original works from our super creative students. It’s always a terrific way to finish the year and to hear how much the students have developed on their instruments from the beginning of the year. A very big thank you to our wonderful accompanist Pauline Walden who worked many hours above and beyond her role in order to accompany so many students.
