Drama News

There have been some very exciting Performing Arts achievements celebrated by the Melbourne Girl’s College community over recent years. The start to 2016 has been no exception.
The year kicked off with four 2015 VCE Drama students being invited by the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority to audition for Top Class. Top Class is a showcase of the best of the Performing Arts work from Dance, Drama and Music from across the state for the previous year and demonstrates exemplary work. Students are invited to audition if they achieve a perfect score for their externally assessed solo performance exam. Congratulations to Olivia Kamien-Sarbiinowski, Lucy Kilduff, Edith McLennan and Sunny Youngsmith on their auditions.
Congratulations to Olivia and Sunny who were successful in their auditions and performed at the Arts Centre in Drama Top Class 2016 on the 22nd of March. It was a treat for the attending Melbourne Girls’ College VCE Drama students to see not one but two past students performing their solo pieces.
Further congratulations to Sunny Youngsmith who has since been invited to perform in Top Acts. Top Acts is the final of the VCE Performing Arts showcase series and celebrates the work of students who achieved outstanding results in Dance, Drama, Theatre Studies, Music Performance and Music Investigation. The concert is on Friday 6th May at the Melbourne Recital Centre and tickets are available from the Melbourne Recital Centre.
Sunny has been very busy this year, not only with her Top Class/Acts performances, but also appearing in the 30th International Melbourne Comedy Festival with fellow 2015 Drama student Paloma Clark. “Nobody Tips the Postman” was performed at The Last Jar – Elizabeth Street as a part of the festival. The girls now have their sights set on Edinburgh for 2017. Best of luck Sunny and Paloma.
Late last year the Casting Producer for the ABC3 show, “You’re Skitting Me – Season 3” contacted Melbourne Girls’ College, wanting to find some new talent for the new up-coming season. My year 10 drama class were given access to the casting brief and considered auditioning. I am delighted to say that Marie-Claire Ridgeway, now in year 11, has been announced as one of the five main cast members and has been very busy with filming commitments. The new season of “You’re Skitting Me” airs in August. Congratulations Marie-Claire.
Each year since 2010, a group of Year 11 theatre-lovers have been selected as Melbourne Theatre Company Ambassadors, embarking on a year-long extension program that offers insight into the world of professional theatre. Each month they attend an MTC production, meet with artists and staff, and share their experiences of theatre with like-minded peers. One student can be nominated per school and then 20 lucky students are selected to become MTC Ambassadors. In the last five years Melbourne Girls’ College has had four successful applicants. This year Fatimah Al Marhon was successful in her application. Well done Fatimah!
Congratulations to all of the above girls and thank you. You demonstrate to us all that hard work and determination can make great things happen.
