Ways to support your child at home
Students at St.Raphael's complete a pre test prior to each unit of work in Mathematics. This enables teachers to plan and cater to the needs of individual children. After a unit of work, students then complete a post test. These important assessment tools are shared with parents to enable you see the growth your child has made, highlighting strengths and areas for further support.
You can continue to support your child at home with mathematics by:
- Attitude is the key to success - If your child expects to succeed, success will come. Encourage a positive, have-a-go, you-can-do-it attitude.
- Help your child to see and use Maths in everyday life - encourage your child to experience Mathematics in their everyday life; through cooking (using measuring devices), keeping score in sports games (AFL is particularly great for this), discussing time (noticing how long it takes to complete a task such as dinner, reading clocks), reading and interpreting timetables (public transport, movie times, store opening times), and using money in simple transactions (purchasing simple groceries and calculating change).
- Discuss the fortnightly learning intentions with your child
- Continue to support their Mathletics use - complete weekly tasks set by their teacher. Mathletics also has a great platform to reinforce automatic recall of number facts through the Live Maths feature. Children can explore the Rainforest Maths tab to further reinforce number concepts.
- Games are a great platform for Maths learning - engage with your child by regularly playing Maths games at home. Maths games often reinforce number knowledge and promote strategic thinking.
