Sport

Wantirna Sport

Sport at Wantirna College aims to provide all students a chance to experience a wide range of sporting opportunities. The Sports program promotes and develops the personal growth of all students and encourages students to engage in a healthy lifestyle.  Sport improves physical fitness and skills, develops sportsmanship and teamwork, promotes self-esteem and confidence, and builds strong connectedness within the school community through student and staff interaction.

Training and team selection usually occurs during lunchtime and after school.

For students to be eligible for team selection, students must register online and attend all tryouts and information meetings, and attend all practice sessions as required by the coach. All students are expected to meet academic expectations across all subjects in addition to maintaining all behavioural expectations of the College to be eligible to participate in interschool sport. All students must provide written or electronic (Compass) parent consent strictly 2 days prior to the event to be eligible to attend, as well as attend all interschool sport events in full College PE uniform (school policy).

Sports Carnivals

All sport carnivals are an integral part of promoting the school community at Wantirna. As part of our commitment to school sport we run two whole school sporting carnivals each year. The swimming and athletics carnivals are a great opportunity for students to get to know their peers and to develop a sense of team in their Home Group.

It is an expectation that all students attend and we offer a range of competitive and novelty events to allow all students, regardless of ability, to participate.

Each year we also hold a Cross Country fun run in Term 2. To encourage physical fitness and build resilience we expect all students in Year 7-10 to participate.  The event is optional for VCE and VCAL students as the event coincides with a busy time of the year for their assessment.

Attendance at the College Swimming and Athletics carnival is compulsory for all students. The Cross Country is compulsory for years 7-10 students and optional for years 11 & 12 students, with students encouraged to participate in as many events as possible. Carnivals have an emphasis on participation and enjoyment, with the ablest and talented students selected to represent the College at interschool and regional levels. The College runs all events in year levels, however students are selected for the College team in age groups, as required by SSV.

Wantirna Annual Swimming Carnival

The Wantirna annual Swimming Carnival is fast approaching and will be held on Tuesday 21st February. Consent for the upcoming Swimming Carnival is now on Compass.

Consent MUST be obtained via Compass strictly one day prior to the event (Monday 20th February). No payment for the swimming carnival is required as this has been paid through the sporty levy. Some year 7 parents may have completed a consent form already, if consent can also be completed on Compass that would be greatly appreciated.

We would like to emphasise to students and parents that attendance to the Swimming Carnival is compulsory for all students. Students are required to attend home group as per usual, and will then travel by bus to and from the venue.

Students are encouraged to dress up in their home group colour theme. Students should speak to their home group teacher regarding their colour theme. Year 12 students are encouraged to start thinking about their carnival costumes. The annual year 12 parade will be taking place once again! Student’s swimwear and other worn clothing should be suitable for a school event at a public venue.

Students are required to bring bathers, towel, lunch, drinks, sunscreen and a hat for the day. There will be a canteen selling limited food and drinks on the day.

For those that do not wish to take part in formal sports, there is still plenty to do with numerous novelty events, and prizes on offer. The carnival is a great chance for the student body and staff to come together and enjoy one of two whole school events.

We would like to ask all parents to please approve consent on Compass as soon as possible, to ensure attendance at the event, and to assist staff in avoiding the need to chase consent from students.

If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact the college.
