CLASS 6 CAMP

Enjoy reading about aspects of the recent Class 6 Camp to Vaughan Springs written by several students.

A Poem about the Class 6 Camp

Setting up the tents,

Sitting by the river,

Studying rocks and crystals

Said Bernice, “Let’s go and swim.”

Stalk the lantern is what we played at night,

Singing by the firelight.

Camping by the River

Class 6 had a wonderful camp in Vaughan Springs just by the river. It was pouring with rain the first day but after that it was very sunny. We went on bush walks and we played stalk the lantern.

Quartz Crystal

The Quartz Mine near Garfield was big. It is on the side of a dirt track like a big wall, with stones poking out at odd angles. If you climbed it the rocks would fall down causing possible landslide falls. The edges were made of big stones and dirt. In the stones were small crystals, but nothing too big. The rim was not big and had just enough room for one person to walk safely around it. In the centre little trees, bushes and rocks covered the surface. The old mine had been used to get quartz crystal for radios in the second world war.

The Quartz Mine

On the Year 6 camp I learnt that quartz is a rock, which was used in a radio in the Second World War. Quartz has heat and when the heat is removed using pressure it makes an electric current, known as frequency. The more heat in the quartz the higher the frequency. That is why they were used in radios.

Gold Fever

People were running around selling all their possessions to come to Australia in search of gold, hoping to find some gold and become rich. On our geology camp we explored the Garfield water wheel and how its hammers went pounding down on rocks, crushing them for people looking for gold.
