Jemima Lam and Jessie Radda have been representing MGC in the Senior Women's division of the Victorian Interschools Cycling Series. Jessie Radda held the leader's jersey for the first 4 races of the series. Jemima Lam placed 2nd in the 5th race on 23 February, a criterium held in Geelong, and took the leader's jersey. Jessie placed 3rd in Geelong. There are two races remaining in the series - we wish both girls luck!

If anyone is interested in racing in the remaining races, you can find information on the Cycling Victoria website, or speak with Jemima or Jessie.

MGC Cycling Team 2019

MGC entered a team in the Victorian Interschool Cycling Series in the Senior Female A division.  The series consisted of 7 events, held over term 4 2018 and term 1 2019.  The last event was held 31 Mar 2019.  The series consisted of different events including individual time trials, team time trials and criteriums.

MGC dominated the Senior Female A division, with at least two podium places in each of the seven races and held the leaders jersey for 5 out of the 7 rounds (Jessie Radda 3 and Jemima Lam 2).  MGC started the last race holding overall second and third positions.  With a fantastic team effort, the race was won with MGC taking out first and third and an over win for division. We would like to congratulate Jemima Lam for being the overall series leader for the Senior Female A division and Jessie Radda for an overall third place.  Congratulations girls for a great effort and result.

MGC placed 7th out of 55 schools.

Victorian Weightlifting Association School Leauge  by Phoenix Goodwin

I had been doing gymnastics for 10 years and then retired a few years ago due to a back injury. I decided it was time for a new sport. I tried diving, taekwondo, rock climbing, track cycling and weightlifting. It was weightlifting that then became my new focus and passion. I started it about a year ago and haven’t stopped since. I had my first comp at the end of last year. It was a good start and a great time for me to get myself out there in the weightlifting sport itself.

On Friday, I competed for the school in weightlifting in the VWA school league 1. It was the first competition for the year. It had an excellent day. As reported by Weightlifting Victoria, I had a ‘top performance with 6/6 lifts finishing with 50kg Snatch and 60kg Clean and Jerk for the trifecta setting a new Snatch, Clean and Jerk and Total, State and National Record in the 49kg Class in the Under 15 and Youth age groups.’

I am now looking forward to a challenging and rewarding 2019 in weightlifting and preparing for the Victorian Championships in May.

Swimming – Northern Metropolitan Swimming Championships

Our swimmers competed in their 2nd carnival for the year last Wednesday at Watermarc, Greensborough. With only the 1st placed swimmer from each event progressing through to the State Finals, our students knew they had to be on top of their game as they battled against the best swimmers from the Northern Metropolitan Region.

We set the team a target of 20 gold medals (19 won in 2018) as well as 1st or 2nd in the overall schools aggregate.

The athletes were more than up for the challenge, setting 3 NMR records and 13 MGC records on their way to a tally of 23 gold medals for the day. With 8 silver and 4 bronze, it equaled a grand total of 35 medals for the day (up from 33 in 2018). Unfortunately when it came to the overall best school, we narrowly finished 3rd behind Viewbank and University HS. For the record, results in the Boys events also count towards this award, so any result in the top 5 schools is an amazing achievement.

The swimming team will now compete in 15 individual and 8 relay events at the SSV State Championships on Wednesday, April 24th.
