Year 7 Felt Bunnies for Easter

By Genevieve Kessey

It all started on Thursday the 28th of March at lunch time. I was torn because I still hadn’t finished the Hunger Games series and all of my friends were discussing if they were team Peeta or Gale. I didn’t have enough time to find the next book from the library and the canteen line was too long, so we decided to wait for the siren to whirl near the Lyceum, indicating the end of lunch. But, when we arrived near the sun room, it was different. There were Year Sevens from all different houses seated around a table, there was fabric everywhere- and when I say everywhere it was like a bomb composed of design and technology supplies exploded! -  And also, a constant round of laughter and giggles could be picked up on one’s ears from the other side of the campus.

I poked my head in and soon discovered that everyone was making felt bunny rabbits. “Why are people making rabbits out of felt?” I thought as I looked through the fabrics. There were all the colours of the rainbow, there were even white, pink and purple felts with sparkle! “Easter’s in 24 days!” one girl ranted, making what looked like her third mini bunny pin. That girl’s small outburst of excitement brought a smile to my face, as I pondered about what the bunny represented.

New life, new beginnings. In a way, those little colourful Easter bunnies made me think about us all on the first day of school, knees wobbling and teeth chattering, thinking about our hard to read timetables and who we’ll have lunch with. We were brand new, many of us terrified and it took me a while to realise that nearly everyone in MGC has been in our same position.

After finding enough of one colour to make both sides of the rabbit, I started to cut it out. “Darn it!” I thought, realising it wasn’t Friday yet. “What time is it?” my friend asked.

“It’s ten-to.” I replied, realising I had just over five minutes to finish it off. I did a few rushed blanket stitches, then the senior warning bell sounded. “Don’t worry girls, you can come back and finish your rabbits on Monday the 1st, next week at lunch.” reassured Mrs Bussetti. I sigh in relief as I start to pack away my things, ready for class.

I had a wonderful time making my little felt bunny. Although it was a very simple task, it was interesting to see how people decorated their bunnies to match their personality and inner “razzle-dazzle” with buttons, sparkles, beads and more! It was such a lovely idea and I would love to thank Mrs Bussetti for bringing all of the fabric and materials for this cute little project and sparing her lunchtime, along with Ms O’Connell. We all greatly appreciate the work and time you put into this fun, imaginative activity, and are very grateful for your enthusiasm.
