My Road

My Road
The Beacon Foundation was set up with the aim of motivating and supporting young people to successfully transition from school to further education or meaningful employment. Fifteen of our female Year 10 and 11 students were lucky enough to be able to participate in a session where they were mentored through video conferencing on topics including digital communication, effective relationships, and resilience. The session sparked curiosity amongst the girls in relation to what they would like to do after leaving high school, what skills they might need, and how they might go about landing their dream job. Here is what a few of the girls had to say about the session:
On Tuesday, the 13th, we participated in the ‘My Road’ program run by the Beacon Foundation. It involved us breaking up into three groups, each with our own mentors who we got to talk with via Zoom video conferencing (which is similar to Skype). The mentors work for large companies.
It was an amazing experience talking to him and he motivated us to do well in our education from all of his achievements. He also gave us strategies to use in our current work forces to help deal with situations and gain positions of responsibility.

We found the My Road session very informative. We got to speak to a guy called Christian who works in the information technology field in Tasmania. He told us about his job and what he did to get there and asked us what we would like to do in the future.
We talked about how technology in our careers and how social media could be used in businesses. He also asked us about how we could use technology to help find jobs and gave us some information in this area.
We discussed ‘work- readiness’ skills that could be good for both when we go to university and start working. I think it was a really interesting session and would recommend other students to participate in sessions like these if they get the chance.
