Reading

Last week in reading students investigated the /q/ phoneme (sound). Students were interested to learn that to make the /q/ phonemes they had to combine the /k/ & /w/ phonemes together. Students found all sorts of /q/ words and quickly discovered that each word used the spelling choice of qu e.g. queen, quail, quickly, squawking.

Students searched through their own texts and located many examples!

Writing

On Tuesday last week our writing session focused on including detail in a recount about the long weekend. Students focused on including the when, who, where, what & why in their writing. Our remaining sessions focused on descriptive writing, students wrote a description about a friend using the description bubble.

Numeracy

This week in numeracy we have continued to focus on addition and the strategies we can use when adding two collections together; counting all and counting on.  When counting all, we are counting each of the collections individually to find the total.  When counting on, we have been working on students being able to identify the bigger number and then counting on to find the total.
