Archaeology and Heritage

Year 9 and Year 10

Mr Cupic's Archaeology class has been working very hard this semester on their archaeological dioramas. Archaeology (History Elective) is a subject that gives students who love History a chance to explore the past in a deeper way. The focus of Archaeology is to explore the past with a project-based approach. Topics we have investigated so far this year include Ancient Archeological sites and Ancient, Medieval and Modern Societies. Students were required to research a significant archaeological site and then create a physical diorama using materials of their choice.

The quality of the work from Year 9 and Year 10 students was very impressive and students really displayed their enthusiasm for History.

Josephine Zucco, Year 10

Archaeology (History Elective) is a subject that gives students who love History a chance to explore the past in a deeper way. The focus of Archaeology is to explore the past with a project-based approach. Topics we have investigated so far this year include Ancient Archeological sites and  Ancient, Medieval and Modern Societies.  Archaeology brought history back to life with the construction of our miniature sized archaeological sites. In this class, students were enticed to find an archaeological site that would interest and encourage them to explore that area more.

Learning about the The Oracle of Delphi inspired me to reconstruct it. The legend of people travelling all around the globe to hear prophecies, the relation between Greek mythology to why they built it and the great respect towards the community that allowed more changes and created power. Although there were many great finds when going through Delphi.

I faced some challenges to finish my final product, some including that it as made from foam so cutting it was a bit of an issue and the painting didn’t turn exactly how it should of been due to the lack of resources. Nethertheless, this is one of the greatest assignments ever given to our class, encouraging us to continue learning and researching this amazing site!

Marios Yousif, Year 10

With effort  comes reward, this assignment was hand made and took me approximately three days to create. The building of the Great Pyramids of Giza was challenging and difficult in many ways.

The product was inspired by the Eygptian Pharaoh named Khufu who created it as his burial site. I faced many challenges recreating the Pyramid as it kept on falling apart due to the inadequate resources available to me, as well as the structure of the building. I had to work with what I had and because of the hard work and dedication I efficiently finished the Great Pyramid. Overall I  chose the Great Pyramid of Giza because  of its aesthetics and inspiring design as well as because it's the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World and the only one to remain largely intact.

Tesia Stec, Year 10

I chose to create this site because of my connection to my Polish heritage and wanting to learn more about Polish history. Biskupin was made by the Lusatian culture, who made it as a defensive settlement for the Polish people.

They built Biskupin to be protected from foreign invaders and plunderers as early as the Bronze age. I also picked this site because of how it was separated from the mainland. This location would have allowed for better protection from all angles. This gives us an idea on how the war was at the time. Biskupin had an impact on local societies during the Bronze age as they were developing as a group of people. During the Bronze age when Biskupin was constructed it was idolised as it was one of the most peaceful times to be there for protection as the other parts of Poland were facing foreign invaders and which they soon came to follow after.

One of the major challenges for me was recreating huts and trying to get the proportions right. Also having difficulty replicating the shape of the island. Furthermore I wanted it to be perfect but not always knowing how to get perfection and accepting it as it was and wanting it to be overall historically accurate.
