Life after COVID-19

COVID-19 has created many challenges for all, including lockdown, remote learning, working remotely, or not working just to name a few. But often out of adversity come opportunities, initiatives and new ways of doing the things.

As we are now more than half way through term, it's a good time to reflect on the positives that have come from this time in isolation.

These can include new technical skills through MS teams, Zoom and Web Ex, maybe a new dance routine for Tik Tok and a more independent way of learning.  Or maybe you turned your thoughts to what new careers will exist after the pandemic is long gone.

The Top Industries for Jobs Growth

Over the next five years in Victoria, the top industries for jobs growth will be Health and Social Assistance, Construction, Education and Training, Professional, Scientific and Technical Services. The reasons for jobs growth in these industries are:

  • an ageing population and growing demand for childcare and home care based services.
  • investment in infrastructure, like roads, railways and airports
  • The number of school-aged children is growing and there will be a strong demand for adult and community education. More people will be working part-time in non-teaching support roles.
  • demand is growing for qualified workers in computer system design and the management and consulting sectors.

How to play a part in reshaping our future

Things to look out for include:

  • The State Government will be injecting $27 billion into the Victorian economy with a building blitz. This includes many new homes being built, upgrades to public housing and railways stations, road maintenance and even $1billion for school upgrades. It is expected that 3700 direct jobs and thousands of indirect jobs will be created.
  • A Retrenched Apprentices and Trainee Program will assist apprentices and trainees displaced by the coronavirus to complete their apprenticeships and training to find work.

Skills for Victoria’s Growing Economy

The Victorian Government has commissioned an independent review into Victoria’s post-secondary education and training system.

The review will seek input from students, parents, employers, unions, teachers, training providers and community organisations. There are three ways to become involved in this review:

  • complete an online survey
  • attend a community event
  • upload a submission

The review will assist the government to overcome the current challenges and maximise opportunities for excellence in Victoria’s post-secondary education and training system.

COVID-19 Youth Response Fund

The Foundation for Young Australians has developed a COVID-19 Youth response fund to meet the challenges being faced by young Australians during this pandemic.

There will be one-off grants between $5,000 and $20,000 to youth-led (15-29) initiatives that are responding to the impacts that the virus is having on young people.
