MySelf Program

MyCity:  News Ways to Explore during COVID-19

MySelf Term 2

It has been challenging this term for the Year 9 students. However the MySelf teachers have been very creative, finding new ways to present the curriculum. The MySelf program involves aligning student learning experiences with the world for which they are being prepared. The learning situations, environments, skills, content and tasks are relevant, realistic, and based on the real world. Usually students have many opportunities to travel off campus and demonstrate cooperation as they spend time in the community. However, in these challenging times this has had to change. Our students have shown us the most important school value, resilience.

MyCity

MyCity students have prepared some reflections on their remote learning experiences. They have also created posters of Melbourne that we have shared in the above gallery.

I am extremely proud of the efforts, creativity and responsibly that students have shown for their learning.

Student Reflections

"These past few weeks in MyCity were extremely different from what I imagined. During these times, we would be riding into the city with public transport, seeing learning and understanding Melbourne’s history. Online MyCity has been very easy with a few challenging tasks. I have enjoyed my experience so far with my teacher Mrs Gucci as she has supported my learning greatly during this difficult time. We have learnt about public transport etiquette which is something that everyone should learn about as well as our city's. MyCity has been great and I am very much enjoying it."

"MyCity this term has been disappointing because I was really looking forward to going out and exploring the city of Melbourne. Mrs  Gucci has done a good job of keeping us busy and finding work related to Melbourne for us to do."

"My experiences this term with MyCity has been challenging. The reason why I didn’t have much fun is because we have to stay home and we can’t go out to the city. However, I did learn a lot of new things about the history of Melbourne and its importance. I learnt how Melbourne came to be and why Melbourne is such great city."

"Even though we have not been able to go on excursions due to COVID-19, in MyCity we have been learning about Melbourne and its history. We have done some activities surrounding public transport and public transport etiquette, and we have done activities about the streets of Melbourne and top locations in the CBD."

"I am definitely disappointed by the fact that I can’t go out to the city with my friends every Wednesday but at least I don’t have to worry about finding the routes.  So far in the MyCity program I have had fun making PowerPoints and poster and believe it or not, I have actually learnt some interesting when making my presentations."

"MyCity classes this term has been filled with many interesting things in place of not being able to explore the city ourselves. Despite that, our teacher planned entertaining activities and I’ve learnt so much about the history of Melbourne. I definitely have a solid knowledge of the city now and would love to go to all those places after this whole ordeal!"

"My city has been so enjoyable even though we are learning from home. I have learnt so many new things. I have learnt about the order of streets, new places and lots of history. I wish we could’ve gone to the city but the activities are still really fun and I learn more every lesson."

MyPhoto - Surrealism

MyPhoto students have been exploring different photographic genres each week.

In Week 4, we studied surrealism photography, which is characterised by dream-like visuals, the use of symbolism, and collage/edited images.

Dylan W (9E) has created a series which encourages the viewer to step away from reality and question what they are seeing and what the artist may be communicating through his art.

See some of his images in the above gallery. Well done Dylan!
