Dr Andrew Butt

Welcome all, to what promises to be another Semester of spirited music making at Marist College Ashgrove. This Semester is abundant with performance opportunities for students both within the College, as well as in the wider Community. Please find the Semester 2 Concert Calendar below, including all events and performance dates for the remainder of 2022.

Some of the Semester 2 highlights include the Premier Event for 2022, the biennial “Blue & Gold Concert” on Thursday July 28th. Returning for the first time since 2018, this concert involves the College’s leading ensembles performing in tandem with old-boys, staff and friends of the College, celebrating the rich musical culture of the College and its community. On Sunday July 31st, Big Bands 1 & 2 will travel to Warwick to perform as part of the Jumpers & Jazz in July Festival, this year as part of the festival’s main-event. Big Band 1 will proceed to join the College’s choral and liturgical musicians, providing a variety of musical items for the Marist Schools Australia Conference at Brisbane Powerhouse and St Stephen’s Cathedral from Sunday July 31st to Tuesday August 2nd. In Week 5, Marist College Ashgrove will host the “Essential Ellington Downunder Festival”, welcoming some of the world’s finest jazz musicians from New York’s Jazz at the Lincoln Centre, who will provide adjudication and mentoring to school Big Bands from across Brisbane, including the College’s Big Bands 1 & 2. In Week 6, we are honored to welcome back Marist Ashgrove old-boy Dr Antony Garcia, who will be our guest director for the Marist College Ashgrove Guitar Summit on Wednesday August 17th. Acclaimed guitarist, composer and educator, Garcia has recorded, performed, and collaborated extensively throughout the world with creatives across a diverse range of artistic disciplines.

This year, the culmination of the 2022 Concert Season Soiree will again, fall at the end of Term 3 on Thursday September 15th. All members of the College Community are invited to this annual gala event, to farewell the 2022 Year 12 Senior Musicians, featuring all of the College’s small and large ensembles. Throughout Term 4, the Marist College Ashgrove Music Department will host a variety of lunchtime concerts, open to all students and staff, as well as members of the College Community. These events commonly feature students, staff, old-boys and members of the wider College Music Community.
