Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) – Update

Jayne Hill

We have had a terrific start to Term Three! Everyone is happy to be back at school and loving learning together. In TLI this term we have started focusing on the Super Six reading strategies: Making Connections and Summarising.

In Mathematics we continue to work on place value and the four operations. We are focusing on addition and subtraction strategies and using repeated addition for multiplication. We look at partitioning, breaking numbers down into their place value parts and renaming numbers into their standard and non-standard form. For example, 62 in standard form is 6 tens and 2 ones, 62 can be renamed as 5 tens and 12 ones, or 4 tens and 22 ones, or 3 tens and 32 ones or 62 ones. We enjoy playing games at the start of our sessions where we practice specific skills that we need to work on, for example addition facts and odd and even numbers. It has been great to welcome some new grade two students into the program.
