INDEPENDENT LEARNING THIS TERM

A reminder that there is a change in the dates of the two Years 11 and 12 Independent Learning Days in Term 3. The Independent Learning Day scheduled for Tuesday 2 August (Week 3) has been moved to coincide with the Years 7-12 Learning Conferences on Wednesday 27 July (Week 2). Wednesday 27 July was previously scheduled as a Pupil Free Day, but students in Years 11 and 12 are now expected to use this day for Independent Learning @ Home.

All students are expected at school as usual on Tuesday 2 August.

The second Independent Learning Day scheduled for Tuesday 30 August (Week 7) has been pushed back to Tuesday 6 September (Week 8). All students are expected at school as usual on Tuesday 30 August.

YEAR 7: DIVING DEEP INTO THE SACRED HEART LEARNER ATTRIBUTES

Over this semester, Year 7 students will be working through a series of challenges designed to make them dig deep into four of the six Sacred Heart Learner attributes:

  • Innovation
  • Critical thinking
  • Collaboration
  • Perseverance

Understanding and developing each of these attributes is fundamental to developing our students as learners, not just for success at school, but for success in life.

While not directly the focus of the program, the other two attributes will be on show as students work through every challenge in

  • their active engagement in the team activities.
  • their emerging independence as they take responsibility for the achievement of each challenge and getting the task job done within the time frame.

PCG groups will rotate through four units across the semester with Mr Justin Whitt, Mrs Sandra Manning, Mr Michael Chiera and myself. While the key aim is to foreground the importance of these ‘soft skills’ and increase students’ awareness of what each requires, the other (equally important aspect) is for students to have fun! Finding joy in learning is a critical aspect of education that is often overlooked or, at best, on the margins of our classrooms, and we plan to put joy front and centre in each of our ‘challenges’.
