LOTE

Welcome back to Term Three; we hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break! During the last term in Language, students engaged in language acquisition associated with their Inquiry units of study and developed their cultural understanding of the dragon boat festival traditions. They will further consolidate their language skills and begin new inquiry-based learning this term. Students will also investigate the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, with a look at its origins and how it celebrates worldwide.

Prep

Prep students will focus on the topic of “Colours”. They will learn to recognise and pronounce familiar colours such as red, yellow, green, blue and black, and to apply knowledge to talk about the colours of surrounding objects. Students will demonstrate their knowledge by creating a rainbow poster that contains learnt vocabulary and sentences.

Year 1

Students will keep exploring the topic of “Vegetables”. They will learn to pronounce/recognise the vocabulary such as chilli, potato, carrot, capsicum and tomato, and to apply this knowledge to have a conversation about their most and least liked vegetables. Students will demonstrate knowledge by describing a fridge that contains a variety of vegetables using learnt vocabulary and sentences.

Year 2

Students will expand the topic of ‘Transportation’ to the topic of ‘Places’ in Term Three. In addition to the words such as school, home and park, students will learn new vocabulary like cinema, zoo and museum. They will be able to ask and answer questions about one’s location, and to contribute ideas of planning a trip. A map of imaginary cities will be developed to demonstrate their success. (will they be learning to ask and answer questions, or will they be building on this skill?)

Year 3

Year Three students will learn the language used to describe rooms in a house. They will learn to identify the vocabulary of rooms in different houses and develop metalanguage to talk about language structures. They will demonstrate their learning by designing a dream house and presenting their house in Mandarin. Students will also inquire about how cultural differences impact architectural design through the lens of globalisation. They will then create a poster presentation to share their learning.

Year 4

Students in Year 4 will focus on the topic of  “Subjects”. They will start with learning the vocabulary of subjects and sentence structures for expressing their interest in subjects learned at school and outside the school in Mandarin. Then, students will apply the learned conversational structure in Mandarin to discuss favourite subjects with peers. By the end of the term, students will celebrate their learning by using the app “Puppet Pal” to create an animation clip about favourite subjects with peers.

Year 5

Students in Year 5 will develop an understanding of the origin of Chinese characters and explore their evolution. They will learn how to write Chinese characters and understand their structure and composition. Students will also practice handwriting Chinese characters in the correct writing order. By the end of the unit, students will complete a poster of Chinese Spelling Inquiry to deepen their learning of the Chinese characters, including the history and meaning behind them.

Year 6

Students in Year 6 will learn about some main cities in China and around the world. They will focus on using essential words and sentences to express their thinking about different cities in Chinese. For example, they will learn how to use adjectives, adverbs and conjunction to form sentences in Chinese to describe the features and facts of cities. The inquiry-based learning will help learners to experience and engage with the cities through a global lens. They will explore the history, influence and impact upon society, politics, the economy, and the environment of important cities around the world. As a celebration, students will prepare a group presentation to share their learning.
