Grade 1/2

Numeracy:

We are continuing our focus on Australian coins and notes and students have been learning how recognise, describe and order coins (gr1) and notes (gr2) according to their value. We have practised counting simple collections of coins and played lots of games including "Guess the coin" and "Race to $10". Next week we are looking forward to making some shopping lists, making cafe orders and counting out payments and change. Money is a skill that can easily be reinforced at home through pocket money and at the supermarket and is a great skill for students to practise in this modern age of credit cards and contactless payments.

This week students in grade 1 and 2 have been learning about capacity and have practised measuring using informal units. We have had lots of fun estimating how many unifix or mini teddies or other uniform units will fit into a container and then checking our estimates and counting the actual numbers. We are looking forward to measuring volume and capacity using water and sand next week.

Literacy

Grade 1 and 2's have been learning about making predictions when they are reading. In Readers Workshop have been using our prior knowledge, pictures and words to predict what will happen in a book. The ability to make predictions is very important for building comprehension and deeper understanding of texts particularly as they become more complex. In our Writers Workshop we have been learning about the differences between common nouns and proper nouns. A common noun is a person, place or thing, whereas a proper noun is the name for a specific person, place or thing. Using proper nouns in our writing makes it more interesting and gives the reader a more vivid picture of the writer's characters, settings and stories.

Gardening:

1D spent some time in the garden on Thursday afternoon. They did some weeding, topped up wicking beds with water, visited the chickens and watered the garden.

Buddies:

Grade 1's had fun sharing their favourite book with their buddy. First they made  predictions and then they read it together. Students worked together to create a drawing of their favourite part of the story.
