Year 8 News

Hi everyone!

We’ve been impressed with engagement of Year 8s in their classes and with extra-curricular activities over the past term.  Most students have been settled and focused on their learning.  We’ve had an incursion to help address issues around cyber-bulling and have had good Year 8 representation in sporting opportunities.

Incursion

We had an incursion from Brainstorm Productions on 15th July called “The Hurting Game”. Actors performed different role plays with various scenarios. Our students observed the act and learned how to handle and stop online bullying and to protect themselves and others from online bullying.

Soccer

Interschool Soccer was played in Sale at the end of Term 2. Kurnai had two teams playing - a Year 8 boys' team with students from Morwell and Churchill campuses, and a Year 8 girls' team with Churchill students.

The boys won all four games and have progressed to Gippsland Region Soccer Finals. They displayed a seamless system of play and ensured all their teammates got a fair amount of time on and off the field.

The girls' team was short a few players but still displayed positive and encouraging teamwork. Their game against Lavalla was tough and yet everyone gave it their best shot!

Well done to all Year 8 soccer players!

More Soccer!

On the 2nd August, the Year 8 boys' team travelled to Traralgon to play in the Gippsland round. All students put in a great effort on the day. We won the first game 2-nil, the second game was a hard fought battle but we went down 2-3. Third game we then won 2-nil, coming up as Runners-Up for the day. Great job to all students involved!

Tech School - Industry Tech Taster

Year 8 students are scheduled to attend the Gippsland Tech School on Friday 19th August.  Permission forms are available on Compass.

Students will learn about how technology is changing the world of work and discover why this matters to them. They will rotate through three activities which will expose them to industry, changing technologies, and new ways of problem-solving.

Class Snapshots

English

We are currently studying a film as text unit and are using the movie "Remember the Titans".  As we finalise assessments towards the end of term, we’ll be offering an excursion to ACMI, at Federation Square in Melbourne, where students will participate in a session about film. Students will then watch the new Spiderman movie.  Details will be on Compass in a week or so.

Humanities

This term, students are learning the history of “Medieval Europe”. So far students are working amazingly to understand the feudal system and the lifestyle of that time. Students worked collaboratively and made a few posters of social groups of Medieval Europe. At the end of Term 3, we are going to celebrate a medieval day and will be participating in many activities. We are running costume making activities for students in the after-school class on Wednesday nights. We encourage students to dress up for our Medieval Day on the last day of Term 3!

Science

Students are studying Biology this term.  They’ve recently dissected a chicken wing to study the muscular skeletal system of the arm.  They’re moving on to dissect sheep hearts and lungs over the next couple of weeks.

Art

The year 8s have been learning to draw objects in two-point perspective. This type of drawing can be difficult to get your head around and the students have done an amazing job of creating a city street in two-point perspective. This type of drawing is important to know if students choose to go into careers around construction, architecture, game design or even city planning.

They have created a range of vastly different city streets of creative themes that make an engaging display all together.
