Principal Team's Message

Our Assistant Principals reflect on term three

Our reflection on 2022 so far

It has been a busy and very productive term three. Our students have participated in a wide range of activities and programs throughout the term. Including subject selection (from years 8- 11), VM (Vocational Major 2023) interviews, year 9 city program, senior warm and fuzzy day, meet the duxes, high ability programs, outdoor education camps and other extracurricular activities. Our students have demonstrated outstanding participation in these activities and adhered to our school values of respect, resilience, responsibility and endeavour.

Parent, Student and Teacher Conferences

Our whole school parent, student and teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday, 13 September from 3:45 pm until 6:45 pm. This is a fabulous opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers to understand their progress and how you can support them at home. Our Work Habits reports that have been recently released may be a useful point of discussion and we would encourage you to come with a few questions prepared to get the most out of your seven minutes with each teacher.

We would encourage all of our parents/carers and students to attend our conference night on Tuesday 13 September from 3:45 pm until 6:45 pm.

Refurbished Toilet Block

Our newly refurbished toilet block is due to be open around the time of publishing this newsletter. This project which was initiated in 2020 as part of the Department’s Shovel Ready project drive and has taken a little longer than we would have liked for it to be completed but we are very happy with how the space has come up. Replacing the traditional male and female communal bathroom spaces (that had individual cubicles), these are fully self-contained, individual bathroom spaces, each with its own mirror and sink. There are female, unisex and male bathroom spaces, ensuring that we continue to be a gender-inclusive school.

Increased health and hygiene measures

A number of very important health and hygiene practices continue to be implemented in the school.

Hand sanitiser is available in every classroom and around the grounds for students to access. Our COVID safe actions also reinforce staying at home if students are unwell and getting tested and physical distancing when possible.

Uniform

Wearing full and correct uniform is important to our school community. Throughout the term, we have reminded all students about the expectations of wearing full school uniform and the clear consequences if they choose not to.

Windcheaters and coloured long sleeve tops are not permitted to be worn at school.

The college jacket and jumper are available for purchase from the uniform shop. We remind families that plain white socks are to be worn (no markings) and black leather laced school shoes are the only footwear permitted to be worn to school.

A reminder that the uniform shop is open every Tuesday from 3:30 pm until 5:30 pm

Jewellery Policy Reminder

Facial ring piercings (including the half ring and ball nostril ring) are not permitted under any circumstances at school.

Students will be asked to remove them immediately and parents of persistent offenders will be contacted. For occupational health and safety reasons, students are only able to wear a stud.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 students participated in work experience at the end of term 2. This was an exciting time for the students as they ventured into the workforce to determine suitable pathways for their future. Teaching staff were busy visiting students in their workplace, discussing the pros and cons of the different career options which transferred to subject selections early this term.

This important experience helps our students decide whether their choice is something they would pursue in the future. Discussion with some students revealed that they were no longer interested in a career they initially thought suited them and others were extremely positive about the options available and how work experience has helped them plan for the future.

Year 9 Engagement Program

Term 3 is an exciting time for year 9 students at Sunbury College. The Engagement Program which runs all term consists of a series of city excursions that run each week. Students have been participating in various learning experiences designed to develop personal and interpersonal skills with links to different areas of the curriculum.

So far, the range of experiences have been linked to learning in science, humanities (history), PE and the arts.
