Our New Before and After School Care Provider

Our new provider commenced on Monday and by all reports (from our most important stakeholders - the students) our new coordinator Jaime is a star. After such a prolonged effort to organise a new provider, we ask that you support the program if required. In some more good news, we are looking at commencing a holiday program as of the term three holidays.

RAP Working Party met last Friday
RAP Working Party met last Friday

Last Friday, Marty Fitzpatrick led students and parents through the first meeting of the Working Party to help create and design the school's RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan).

Some future leaders of our school (Year 5 students) are part of the Working Party and provided the meeting with a range of thoughts and ideas. Here's just a few of their ideas...

  • learn about all the different groups in Australia ~ the language map in the library
  • learn some local Aboriginal words (eg the language of Woiwurrung)
  • all students in the senior part of the school to be aware of Koorie organizations in the Preston area.
  • To continue to be part of the City of Darebin Yarning Conference.
  • I want all the young kids to learn some aboriginal stories.
  • I want for all the different year levels to read aboriginal books.
  • I want the 5/6s to learn about the culture and stories (Dreamtime) of Aboriginal People.
  • For the Preps - 1,  they could learn about the colours of the flags and what they mean, and also read some Dreamtime stories.
  • I want to learn about the names of places in their Aboriginal language.
  • As part of an assembly, organize a welcome to country.
  • Get an Aboriginal Elder to come to the school.
  • Add more Aboriginal books for the library so more people can learn about the stories and culture etc.
  • Where do you belong and how do you fit in?
  • I want to learn about different foods in the different regions.
  • I  want everyone to learn about where the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people learned how to make food and live.
  • I want everyone to learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander beliefs.
  • I would like everyone to learn about the aboriginal culture and how they lived for a long time with no supermarkets.

As you can see, the future looks bright if our young people are given the chance to lead. We're really looking forward to this Working Party coming together throughout the year to devise our Sacred Heart School RAP. If you would like to be part of this great work, please do not hesitate to email Marty at mfitzpatrick@shpreston.catholic.edu.au

Election Day Preparation and Fund Raising

Thank you to the Sacred Heart Community

Something important happened on Saturday 21st May! Some of you may  be thinking it was the Federal Election, but even more important than that was the Cake Stall and Toy Sale we had on the same day.

With Sacred Heart being one of the polling booths in the area, the Parents and Friends Committee decided we would take the opportunity to raise some funds for our school.

But we could not have done it without the support from the entire school community!

Thank you to all the parents, friends, family members, teachers, staff and students who baked and donated delicious treats for the cake stall and donated toys, puzzles, games, books etc for the toy sale.

It was lots fun and a great success, raising over $1,000 for our great school!

Thank you again,

Cettina (Mum of Joseph)

On behalf of the Parents and Friends Committee

Parents and Friends News

Further to Cettina's report above, yesterday I had the very pleasant task of depositing $2,3125.90 into our Parents and Friends account as a result of the various fund raising conducted this year by our magnificent committee, and support by our families. So far this year our P and F group have organised amongst other initiatives: the Easter Raffle, Hot Cross Bun Selling, Mother's Day Stall and the Election Fundraiser. Thank you so much to this energetic group of mums and dads and stay tuned for more exciting events in the second half of this year. If you would like to join the group please see Jodi or myself.

Meeting tomorrow: Friday 10th June 9.00am in the staffroom

Feast Of The Sacred Heart

We will celebrate our school and wider parish's feast day on Sunday 19th June with a celebration of the Eucharist at 10.30am. We would love to see as many families as possible at Mass and for the refreshments after. We will need students as always to participate in the Mass. Please see Kate's section in this newsletter for more details.

Enrolments for 2023

A reminder that enrolments for 2023 Year Prep will officially close on Monday 20th June.  If you know of any families who would like a tour, please encourage them to contact the school by phone or email.

Annual Report To The Community

Each year schools need to evaluate and report on their practices and achievements as part of an Annual Report to the Community. It is a legislative requirement that it is published and available for all parents and members of the wider community to read. As always, this report will be available to read via our website and will be presented to our School Board at our next meeting on Tuesday 14th June.

RSL Fundraising

Thank you to our students who supported our local RSL by purchasing a badge during the ANZAC Day period earlier this term.

Latest Joke From The Parish Bulletin

While walking to work a Member of Parliament is hit by a truck and dies. His soul arrives in heaven where he is greeted by St Peter. “Welcome to heaven,” says St Peter. “Before you settle in, there’s a problem. We seldom see a top official around here, so we're not sure what to do with you.” “Just let me in,” says the politician. “Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. So, we'll have you spend one day in hell and one day in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.” St Peter escorts him to the elevator and the MP goes down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a lush green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians he had known. Everyone is smiling. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of other people. They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne. Also present is the devil, who is a friendly and jovial bloke who dances and cracks jokes. They are having such a good time that before too long it's time to go. Everyone gives the politician a hearty farewell as the elevator heads skyward. The door soon opens and St Peter is waiting for him. “Now it's time to visit heaven,” declares St Peter. A day passes with the politician joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realises it, the 24 hours have gone by and St Peter returns. “You've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity,” says St Peter. The MP reflects for a minute, then answers: “Heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.” So St Peter escorts him to the elevator and the politician descends to hell. When the doors open, he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the rubbish and putting it in black bags. The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. “I don't understand,” stammers the MP. “Yesterday there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, danced and had a wonderful time. Now there's just a wasteland and my friends look miserable. What happened?” The devil smiles and says, “Yesterday we were campaigning. Today you voted.

Please take care.

Yours Sincerely
