Inquiry - Term Three
PLACE
This term students in Year One will be studying Australia including identifying a variety of Australian locations on a map and show an understanding of the diversity in Australian culture. Throughout this unit students will identify and describe features of places at a local scale and how they change. Students will also identify Australian locations on a map and identify how people are connected to different places. Students will learn about diversity and also describe the weather and seasons and the ways in which they affect different cultural groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

On Monday 5th September, all Year One and Year Two classes will be participating in Puffing Billy Railway’s curriculum-based Education Program.
The Education Centre Program will cover the following parts of our curriculum: Community History - The history of a significant person, building site or part of the natural environment in the local community and what this reveals about the past. Geographical Knowledge - Natural, managed and constructed features of places their location and how they change. Reasons why some places are special and some places are important to people and how they can be looked after.
Students will travel by bus from Upwey South Primary School to the Puffing Billy station at Belgrave, departing from school at 9:45am. Students will then travel on Puffing Billy to Emerald and then return by bus to Upwey South Primary School. Students will return to school at approximately 3:00pm.
You can access the details, give permission and pay for the excursion through Compass.
Term Three Tricky Words
Through the InitiaLit program a range of Tricky Words are taught. These words are referred to as Tricky Words as they cannot be spelled by sounding them out. After reading with your child, feel free to extend them by practising the words below.
Home Readers
For every person reading is an important life long skill. We strongly encourage reading everyday to support your child's consolidation of this ability. This term, one to two readers will be given out on a Monday and changed over the following Monday. This change will allow more opportunities for your child to practise their reading.
Readers will be given on a Monday and are required to be returned on the following Monday.
