I'm so happy to see our mural up on the wall in the courtyard. This mural is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging. It is a celebration of the diversity within our school and community. Well done to art captains Taya and Logan as well as Ellouise who played a big part in its creation.
Semester 2 will have a focus on textiles and sculpture, exploring the elements of form and texture by experimenting with wools, clay and all things 3D.
In foundation, students are being introduced to sewing. This activity requires gentle and precise hand movements to develop fine motor skills. Students have created their own sewing cards inspired by 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. We had lots of fun reading this classic book and painting the fruits which the hungry caterpillar gobbled up. After punching holes in the sides, students were able to practice sewing in and out in a running stitch or around the edge in a whip stitch. While this is an introduction to their main focus piece for this unit, they are also great pieces by themselves and show the resilience and perseverance of our students.
Year 1 and 2 students have begun working on their sewing piece. They are learning accuracy and patience by creating a running stitch border with precise counting to keep their stitches even. This piece will take them several weeks, but will cement their knowledge of basic techniques. After a brief detour to draw some incredible piranhas, this week students began work on a fish detail. Students designed a fish template to fit in their work which they will detail using a variety of techniques.
Year 3 and 4 students were introduced to the ugly doll project. This task focuses on hand sewing and the design process. Students have begun designing their dolls, giving them a backstory, understanding characteristics and choosing a colour scheme. They have also begun creating a template they will use to create their pieces. The students are all very excited to start assembling their ugly dolls throughout the term.
Year 5 and 6 students completed their Onomatopoeia Pop Art words by adding paper layers, highlights and glitter if they chose. It's been fantastic to see the variety and imaginations come about in their work as they experiment with ideas and techniques.
This week, students are continuing to develop their design skills by creating posters for our upcoming production of the Wizard of Oz. Students are collaborating to create eye catching designs to grab your attention and provide all the information you need to buy tickets, so be on the lookout for this very soon.
