Welcome to Term Three!

Halfway through the year already, and a busy term ahead with Production (August 24 & 25). Congratulations to all of our students on such a great start to the term. We would like to thank you for bringing in newspapers for our students to explore and use as writing prompts. They certainly came up with some very interesting headlines.

My Country

This term, the Year Three/Four students will be exploring "My Country" in their Inquiry lessons.

These are just some of the questions we will be answering as we learn all about "My Country" this term.

  • How is Australia represented as states and territories?
  • What are the features of these states and territories?
  • How are the many Countries/Places of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout Australia represented?
  • What are some of our neighbouring countries?
  • How does our environment different to other places in the world?
  • How can we represent the geographical characteristics of places on simple graphs and maps?

To answer these questions, the students are going to complete a major project. Each student will choose a state (other than Victoria), create an information report and deliver an oral presentation. The students will:

  • Mark their state on a map of Australia, identify the capital city and population size.
  • Identify the geographical features of their state.
  • Identify the aboriginal peoples who live/d in their state.
  • Identify the climate of their state.
  • Identify the natural vegetation/biome in their state.
  • Identify the native animals found in their state.

To complete their project, students will learn research skills; including how to find reputable webites and how to paraphrase information. They will learn how to structure an information report, and how to read and interpret maps. Lastly, the students will learn presentation skills so that they may orally present their work to their classmates.

Before beginning the project, the Year Three/Four students have been exploring Australia's place in the world, our neighbouring countries and how Australia is divided into States and Territories.

The students thoroughly enjoyed studying a world map; identifying countries they knew and had heard of, and discovering countries they hadn't heard of.

To deepen our understanding of the similarities and differences between Australia and neighbouring countries, the students worked in groups to read information about our neighbouring countries and discuss how they compared to Australia.
