WELLBEING

An afternoon with the St James Allied Health Team

What a wonderfully informative afternoon we had with our fabulous Allied Health Team. On the 22nd of July Adele (Speech Therapist), Ashley (Occupational Therapist) and Maureen (School Counsellor) each shared their knowledge and expertise through interactive presentations.

“Thanks again for organising last Friday's afternoon session.  It was great to get an insight and a better understanding of the St James Allied Health Team. Many thanks to Adele, Ashley and Maureen"

"We feel very fortunate to have the additional expertise complementing our wonderful teachers.  I do highly recommend running this session again – it was very informative"

Our parents who were able to attend have agreed, we will be running the session again, hopefully at the beginning of term 4. Stay tuned!

Ripple PLT

On Tuesday evening our members of staff were involved in a professional development session with the founder of Ripple Gregory Nicolau.  Ripple is our wellbeing check-in survey that the students of St James take part in each Tuesday and Thursday morning. The check in is simple to use and easy for the students to complete. There are 8 categories that the students use to check in on how they are feeling.  These include food, sleep, concentration, health, friendships, safety, happiness and calmness. Ripple along with our Zones of Regulation check ins provide data that enables our staff to ensure that they are understanding how ready students are to learn whilst at school and if there are things that may be worrying them.

Here are some of the points that Gregory spoke about:

  • Anxiety can be seen in 3 levels
    1. Discomfort
    2. Distress
    3. Dysfunction
  • Changing a pro-social behaviour can take 12 months and even then the behaviour is only changed 70% of the time.
  • We can tell when a behaviour has changed as the length of dysregulation decreases, the frequency decreases and the noise of the dysregulation lowers.

When we approach a situation we can ask ourselves the following questions before we respond:

  1. What do I see?
  2. What are they feeling?
  3. What has happened?
  4. What can we do?

We must understand how reactive versus responsive can change the outcome of a situation.

I will leave you with this quote  “Don’t just do something, sit there”
