Foundation: 100 Days of School!

Last Friday the Foundation students celebrated 100 days of school! There were some amazing costumes that related to the number 100 including homemade creations, grannies and grandpas, hundreds and thousands, 100 year old war veterans and ladybugs with 100 spots. We had a fantastic time doing yoga and a craft with our buddies, hunting for 100 hidden stars, making collections of 10, having a dance party and sharing a delicious lunch. We ended the day with a special celebration with the Foundation families. A big thank you to all of the parents who helped prepare the shared lunch and joined us in celebrating this very special occasion.

Makey Makey

This term we have started our Inquiry journey with many different learning opportunities to allow us to understand that energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity.

Hands on STEM activities using Makey Makey works by alligator clipping into everyday things that have some conductivity. When you hook an alligator clip into a banana and you hold an alligator clip connected to EARTH, you are actually the conductive stuff that closes the circuit and makes Makey Makey work!

We asked questions such as ‘Is a banana conductive?’ What does it mean for an item to be conductive? or an insulator? or even a resistor? and searched around the room to discover which materials were and weren't conductive.  We found the classroom is full of conductive objects & materials such as plants, food, metals, even ourselves. In this lesson we learned that everything in the world is either conductive or an insulator; and started to ideate inventions with everyday stuff you can find in your home.

Ceres

On Thursday, the 21st of July the year 5 and 6 students continued their learning journey about discovering different ways in which energy can be transformed from one form to another to generate electricity and evaluate their suitability for particular purposes. We first learnt about fossil fuel and the strain it is putting on the environment. We did this in a fun and interactive way and developed a real understanding of why we need to become more conscious of our ecological footprint. We found it very interesting to know that food waste in normal bins rather than compost causes extreme methane emissions.

Learning methane has 86 times the global warming effect of carbon dioxide, we then ran experiments using different sustainable energy sources such as, wind, thermal solar, solar and hydro energy. We spoke about positive and negative aspects of these energy sources and possible solutions. We watched the documentary 2040 to see what the world could look like by making changes and using sustainable energy solutions that have already been invented. CERES then allowed us to grow our very own 2040 vision which we will be discovering more of during our STEM MAD project this term. We look forward to inviting parents in at the end of term to see our projects.

We, in year 5 and 6, challenge you to complete the ecological footprint calculator as a family and discuss some ways you can reduce your impact on the environment.

Thank you

On Wednesday the 27th of July, the year 6 students held a Oodie/comfy clothes day to thank all the students and families for raising enough money for us to go to dream city in week 6. We just want to say another thankyou for participating in our previous casual clothes day!

Poetry in Year 3/4

This term the children have been writing different poetry.

This week we started learning about ‘Haiku Poetry’.

Haiku poetry follows a specific structure.

The first line is 5 syllables, the second line is 7 syllables and the third line is 5 syllables.

We wrote a Haiku as a class, can you guess what animal we were writing about?
