The Alicia Katz Award

By Vihaan Dalal (6D), Amitoj Singh (6A) and Omba Masudi (6B).

Yesterday the 5th of September we were chosen by our Year Six teachers to represent the school and to collect the Alicia Katz Award for the Parliament Prize!

At 3:00 pm, we reached the parliament and were taken to the Queen Victoria room where the ceremony was held. Those who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the Years Five-Six, Years Seven-Nine and Years Ten-Twelve were there to accept their awards and we were shown each of their videos so we could understand why they were selected as winners. Once the individual prizes were given it was our turn. President of the Council, Hon. Nazih Elasmar made a speech where he praised our students hard work and stated that Saltwater P-9 College has “made an impact in the competition” due to the quality of our entries. It was our honour and privilege to represent our school and our peers at such an important event.

We had the opportunity to speak with other Members of Parliament when the awards commenced. One member we spoke to was Andy Meddick, who is a member of the Animal’s Justice Party. He sits in the crossbench at the Victorian Parliament House and he is passionate about advocating for human and animal rights. We have invited him to our exhibition next week and we are very excited that he has accepted our invitation.

To conclude our ceremony, the hosts offered us a tour through the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Throughout the tour, we learnt about important information and facts regarding the Victorian Parliament.

It was a thrilling and fun experience that we will all remember for a long time.

Year Six Exhibition

On the 12th and 13th of September, our Year Six students hosted Saltwater College’s very first exhibition. The exhibition is a significant event that happens during a student’s final year of primary school and throughout this journey, students were required to identify, investigate and offer solutions to real life issues or problems. Students were excited to showcase their learning and they all presented their work with pride to our Saltwater community.

Throughout the exhibition journey, our students continued to display all of the attributes of the learner profile and it was evident in their work that each and every one of them put a lot of time, effort and commitment into their learning.

The students were excited to welcome and present their learning to the community, which included several distinguished guests.

Susan McIntyre, council member for Wyndham, was amazed at the Year Six students' work and felt inspired after leaving our exhibition. Upon reflection, she stated that she thinks our future is in safe hands.

Member of the Victorian Legislative Council, Andy Meddick, felt that what each student achieved was simply incredible and he took the time to share his own knowledge and background with several of our students.

Our Year Six students should all be very proud of what they have achieved and they should continue to use their voice and agency to create change and a better future.
