Year Five News

Unit of Inquiry

We are well into our fourth Unit of Inquiry under the Transdiciplinary Theme, 'How the World Works'. Students have been looking at many artefacts from the last few decades, video recorders, vinyl records, house telephones to name a few and were utterly stunned by what we used to use. Their wonderings have been VERY interesting!

Reading

Students have been engaged with reading about different technological advancements. They have been assigned books in Epic and in their literature groups, have been given different roles, which they rotate weekly.

Writing

Students have been investigating a particular discoverer and finding information on what made them decide to make the technology they did. They have been looking at people such as Henry Ford, Elon Musk and Benjamin Franklin. They are presenting their findings in a Text Information format.

Maths

In this unit, students have been focusing on money. They have been engaged in working out percentages, calculating change and planning budgets. Some have been using different manipulatives in order to understand currency values. Students have also been engaged in warm up games involving money such as: Greedy pig, Coin toss, Money rush and What's it worth?

Other news

This last week saw us celebrate the return of The House Colours competition, which entails students from all year levels gaining house points for a vast range of activities, from excellent work, to showing caring for our school environment in the yard. Students are receiving raffle tickets and class teachers are adding points up and at the end of the year, the winning house will be announced. It was nice to see al the students in their house colours on Monday!

On Monday 12th students came to school in their footy colours. Great to see who they support! Thursday we had the colour run. Students had so much fun running around and trying to get as much colour on them as possible. We hope that they have managed to get lots of people to donate.

From all the Year Five team please have very restful, safe school holidays and we will see you all back ready to go in Term Four!
