Dear Year Four families,
As Term Three is coming to a close, we would like to shout out a big thank you to the students and their families for their determination, support and participation this term. Year Four teachers are very proud of the students’ wonderful work. From presenting their knowledge of the Unit of Inquiry, to publishing their persuasive pieces, to the wonderful book doors, and book innovations, to the amazing dress ups for the Book Day parade, and house colour run, the smiles, the chats, and everything else in between. We are so proud of each and every one of our students for their efforts and work in Term Three!
Reading
Reading groups have continued to be a big highlight, where students work with different teachers to suit their individual learning needs. With finishing the author study on Chris Van Allsburg’s amazing books students have learned varying comprehension strategies to be able to read not just the book but between the lines to understand author’s hidden message. Students have been reading ‘One Giant Leap’ by Robert Burleigh, exploring author’s craft while connecting to the First Line of Inquiry and learning about explorers and exploration in time. Furthermore students have been working through a range of different inferring strategies. They were able to understand the themes through characters’ dialogue and vivid images
as a strong feature of author’s craft. Finally, we want to congratulate all the students who finished the Premiers Reading Challenge and encourage them to never stop reading and help their friends develop a love for reading.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning all about timetables and multiplication and division strategies. They have continued to work in their mathematics fluid groups where learning is differentiated to suit their individual needs. This is followed by mathematic lessons in class where students have a chance to work in a focus group and collaboratively can strengthen their knowledge of multiplication and division. The students understand that there can be many different answers to open-ended questions and that it is okay to have
different responses to their classmates.
Inquiry/Writing
The Year Four students are thoroughly enjoying our current Unit of Inquiry, with our Central Idea, ‘Exploration leads to discoveries, possibilities and new understandings.’ The students have explored our three Lines of Inquiry and have enjoyed learning about different ways people explore; looking at the past, present and future explorations. Further, we have talked about why people explore. The students are very excited to have the opportunity to work with historical narratives for writing which connect directly to our Unit of Inquiry. They have been working hard on understanding how author’s craft helps their writing , having multiple exposures and looking at the craft of different authors. Students have had a go on writing their version of parts of a historical narrative. Next term they will start their own historical narrative. Once they go through the process the students will then have the opportunity to present their piece to their classmates.
Reminders:
Camp: Please fill in the camp form and proceed with the payment as soon as possible. This will give us time to plan and make sure the process goes smoothly.
Technology/Macs: Please ensure children’s device are fully charged every day, ready to use for their learning.
Homework: Students should still be completing nightly reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each day (this includes reading on online apps such as Epic).
Mathletics and Epic are all learning apps that students should be using regularly to support the practise and consolidation of their literacy and mathematical skills taught in the classroom. Completing assigned tasks on these apps are also a part of our Year Four homework expectations.
If you have any questions, please reach out; Year Four teachers are always more than happy to help.
The Year Four Team would like to wish all families and students a wonderful term break during the school holidays.
We are looking forward to starting Term Four hopefully with some warmer weather.
Kind regards,
The Year Four Team
