Year Three News

Week 5 and 6 Newsletter

Dear Year Three families,

As Term Three comes to an end, the Year Three students have been busy actively engaging in their learning.  The Year Three teachers have been impressed with the quality of work, students have been presenting through their hard work and effort. In Week 8, students celebrated Book Week by creating class door displays and participating in the Book Day parade.

Reading

Students have been exploring Anthony Browne’s craft through his text, ‘Piggy Book’. After being introduced to the text, students have recorded any observations they made and shared their opinions with their peers. Students identified the various parts of the text including the characters, setting, problem and solution. After analysing the text students were able to identify and justify the intended audience for the book, using evidence from the text.

Writing

We have begun exploring ‘Procedural Texts.’ Students have been spending time unpacking the purpose and features of a procedural text. Our students have successfully identified that procedural texts are, ‘How to’ texts and some examples include recipes, directions and instructions. Over the next few weeks, we will be exploring the different types of procedural texts.

Maths

In Maths, teachers have been collecting data to determine the prior knowledge of students in our new unit on Measurement. This data will be used to inform our planning over the unit. We began our Maths unit by exploring the concept of length. Students have spent time in class unpacking what is length and the different ways we can measure length using informal and formal units of measurement. Students engaged in hands on activities using various objects and materials to measure length.

Inquiry

Students participated in our Provocation day for our new Unit of Inquiry based on the Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘How the World Works’.  Students took part in exploring and recording their observations from rolling various sized balls over different surfaces. Classes then spent time over the week unpacking our Central Idea by clarifying the meaning behind different terminology. Each student had the opportunity to record their wonderings which they will research later in the unit.

Year Three Camp

A friendly reminder that payment for camp is due by Thursday 15th September. A final notice regarding clothing and item to bring has been sent home with your child this week. We also have another copy of this note on our Year Three SchoolBox page.

The Year Three teaching team wishes all students and families a restful term break. We look forward to being back for Term Four.

Kind Regards,

Year Three Team
