Onkaparinga Youth Leadership Day

Lauren Buswell, Student Wellbeing Leader

On Wednesday 29 June, nine students from Aberfoyle Park High School were invited to attend the Onkaparinga Youth Leadership day held at Aldinga Payinthi College. We had students from a range of year levels, inclusive of year 7–11.

The day promoted lots of interesting discussion around important issues in their lives and in the community, including mental health, inclusivity and climate change. The students were able to share their thoughts with members of the Onkaparinga Council, as well as other students from Woodcroft College, Cardijn College, Reynella East College, Aldinga Payinthi College and Willunga Flexible Learning Option (FLO) program. It was really great having conversations with the students and hearing ideas of what they are wanting to bring back and explore further in our school community. Some of the feedback from the students included:

"Youth leadership is really important in our community, because although adults are reliable, kids can speak up about what's important to them, and not just adults." – Lucy S

"I didn't expect to be interviewed with three other students from Aberfoyle Park High School. I was asked some questions on how the day went and what I liked about it. For someone to record us and put our words out into the world for someone to hear, is exciting." – Lucy S

“I hope I can bring the knowledge back to Aberfoyle Park High School to help more people understand our thoughts and I hope we could absorb more from different people and the opinions from different cultures. I think it would be a nice if we could keep these kind of activities going to find some talented people and talk about ways to improve and raise some youth leaders in the school.” – Lia Y

“ I really enjoyed talking in front of different people and being a voice for our school.” – Lani P
