Indonesia
Over the Easter Holidays 23 Indonesian students from Years 10-12 along with
Br Garry, Mrs Dux and Mr Mills travelled to Bali as part of the Indonesian Immersion Trip.
We stayed in Sanur for 5 nights at Bumi Ayu Bungalows. The first day after arriving we visited the sights of Sanur, including the beach, and the local supermarket/mall. On Sunday we visited Bali Safari and Marine Park before travelling to Kuta for an Easter Sunday Mass at St Francis Xavier Church opposite the Lippo Mall where afterwards we had dinner.
On Monday, morning we went to a local market in Denpasar, before having lunch and travelling back to Sanur for the first of our two hour language lessons. We as students were given an insight to various areas of key vocabulary and conversational language. That night we went and watched a Kecak dance performance. Whilst understanding the performance was difficult is was a great opportunity to experience some of the Balinese Culture.
On Tuesday, we went to Denpasar, where we visited a local department store. It was more of a relaxed day, where we came back for the second two hour language lesson. That night we went out for dinner and a roam around the Sanur shops.
On Wednesday, we participated in a Balinese Dance Workshop, before sightseeing in the afternoon and evening. We visited Mengwi, Alas Kedaton/Monkey Forest and Tanah Lot.
On Thursday, we watched the Barong and Kris Dance Show before visiting Tohpati known for its Batik making, Celuk to see some of the silver works and then into Mas to see some of the traditional wood carving processes. For lunch we went to Kintamani where there is a volcano caldera. Following this we were transferred into our new accommodation in Mas, Ubud.
On Friday, we visited Anugerah School in Denpasar. It was a really good experience. Here, we had the chance to experience what school is like in Bali as well as speaking to the students in Indonesian. Following this we participated in a tour of the Bali Green School. That night was spent in Ubud where we were left to roam and to find dinner for ourselves. When it came to meeting up again everyone was on time, it was just the teachers who were late eating ice cream!
On Saturday, we were back in Kuta again where we were at Waterbom Park for most of the day, before visiting some of the western malls.
Overall, it was a really good experience. After studying the language it was good to get back to the general conversational language and put it into use!
