Careers

A big couple of weeks in the Middle School with Careers Week, Week Three for Year 10 students and Week Four Career related Morrisby testing Week Four, for Year Nine students.

Year 10 Careers Week

The Careers Team with support from The Middle Sub School implement a detailed and informative program for our Year 10 students, providing them with insight and information into all the opportunities and pathways available to students during and post Secondary School; Students meet industry professionals, visit TAFE and Universities, receive practical information around applying for jobs and tax file numbers. The week is designed to really support our students in making the right choices for their individual pathway, culminating in subject selections Thursday afternoon and Friday. Parents are required as we believe it is imperative that Parents are part of this process, after all it is parental support at home that can really benefit students at school.

Please make sure permission slips are returned for TAFE and Uni visits as part of Careers Week. It would be really disappointing if students did not take up this opportunity.

Year 9 Morrisby Testing

Week Four: Year 9 students complete their strength based Morrisby testing. All Year 9 students received a presentation from the Careers Team in preparation for this. The test (not really a test) is designed to identify each students strengths and use this as a catalyst for discussions surrounding Career pathways and goals. This can be incredibly positive and rewarding, especially for those students who feel a little lost, like rudderless boats in the tumultuous sea of adolescence.

Julie Elkin

VCAL Teacher

Year 9 Community Engagement

Ms Elkin’s class visited West Barwon Reservoir, the Wurdiboluc Treatment Plant and Balyang Sanctuary on the Barwon River as part of a project to develop a Virtual Reality film. They had previously been to Geelong Tech School where they had learnt how to use the 360 degree cameras and insert ‘hotspots’ into their film. They will be exploring the themes of water quality, re-use, supply, climate change and the indigenous connection to water in upcoming classes. They will plan their video and then gather ‘assets’ –photos, audio, film – to include in their project when they re-visit Geelong Tech.

Community Engagement students are taking part in the Youth Justice Education program where they will visit the Geelong courts, Deakin Cats Community Centre, Belmont CFA and Barwon Community Legal Service. During the visits to these places they will engage with court staff, police liaison and youth resource officers, speakers from the Centre for Multicultural Youth, BATforce and the CFA. The program culminates with a mock trial, guided by Barwon Community Legal Service. The program runs for the term and will be of great benefit to the participants.
