LEARNING AT LILYDALE

Student Learning at Lilydale

A focus for Lilydale High School in 2019 and beyond is to empower students to become active participants in their own learning. A number of school wide strategies have been implemented to support this initiative.

Below are some suggestions that parents might like to use to prompt conversations about learning. These questions are similar to those that are posed by teachers in their learning conversations with students throughout the semester.

Questions parents can ask students about their learning:

  • What did you learn today?
  • How did you do?
  • What can you do to improve your learning?
  • What are you most proud of?

Learning Conversations

In the next month, each student in Years 7 to 10 will undertake a 'Learning Conversation' with both their English and Maths teachers. The results from the recent on demand tests (Reading and General Maths) will form the basis of this discussion.

Teachers have developed a range of questions aimed at provoking thought about how a student has progressed through the last year of schooling and how they have shown improvement in their reading and maths abilities.

This is a part of an ongoing strategy whereby we are aiming to have consistent ‘check-ins’ with students about their progress at school and their role in constantly improving. It is our vision to have students acutely aware of their level of achievement and their growth in their learning from semester to semester. By discussing their results with their English and Maths teachers, it is hoped that students will be empowered and reflective learners.

Three Way Conferences

Three Way Conferences this semester will be held on Thursday 19  September

Suggested questions for students, teachers and families to discuss are:

  • What is my child learning?
  • How is he or she doing?
  • How do you know (how he or she is doing?)
  • How can she or he improve?
  • What supports can I provide if he or she is struggling?  When will we check in again?
