In the Classroom & Beyond

Chess Club

Imanya Kodituwakku and Mr Charalambous have started a chess club here at JMSS! We play every Thursday and Friday lunchtime and usually 30+ students get involved. Imanya and several others went to a competition and competed against a number of schools and came 3rd. They move onto states.

Imanya won best female player.

East Melbourne Synagogue

The Year 11 History class visited the East Melbourne Synagogue in August. The students participated in a tour with the Rabbi, who talked about the origins of Judaism and Jewish heritage in Australia.

Students received a blessing from the Rabbi and acquired same Hebrew language including 'mazel tov' which means congratulations. The students were also delighted to learn that Sir John Monash was the first boy to have his bar mitzvah in the Synagogue in 1878.

Year 11 Literature

In Year 11 Literature this week, students have been preparing group presentations focusing on how the novel 'The Dressmaker' has been adapted for the screen. Students have been providing constructive peer feedback to each other to enhance the quality of their work.

It has been great to see the class working in such a cohesive and collaborative manner.

FLEET

FLEET is currently helping to run a Year 10 ‘Future electronics’ course in partnership with John Monash Science School, Victoria.

As well as covering the history of semiconductors and computing, and introducing students to Moore’s Law, the course will also be most students’ first introduction to quantum science, and will be Australia’s first introduction to superfluids and topological materials at the secondary school level.

Errol Hunt of Monash University, has shared some images of our JMSS students and their recent experiments.
