EcoSlam 2019

Well done to our two Slam poetry teams who competed in the 2019 Ecoslam at the Royal Botanic Gardens on August 14th, 2019. This is the fourth year that JMSS has competed in the competition, having won twice previously. The students did a fantastic job to get their performances in time.

There was some very polished completion this year and both teams did a great job to get their poems to performance standard in a short period of time.

Hailey Goode, Gagunjoht Kaur and Bavya Kurrlli performed a poem written by Hailey and received a special mention from the judges. Oshini Perera, VImasha Ashton and Melika Modarresi also performed their poem, which was written by Melika. Both poems addressed the impact of climate change and the voice of the next generation over the inaction of governments.

While our teams did not progress to the finals this year, they matched up to the increasingly high standard of performers.

Students wishing to be involved in next year’s competition are invited to keep an eye out for notices early next year.

Envision Hands

Envision Hands (https://envision.org.au/envision-hands/) is a wonderful organisation that recycles used plastic bottle tops to make prosthetic limbs for children in need in under-serviced areas.

Starting next week, new bins will be placed around the school to collect bottle caps for this organisation. Only bottle caps made from grade 2 or 4 plastic can be recycled (most bottle caps are made of this type of plastic anyway). So, before you recycle the cap, just check there is a ‘2’ or ‘4’ on the actual cap (not the bottle).

Also please bring in bottle caps from home! Tell your family and friends to not throw out their bottle caps and bring them into school. Think of all the bottles of milk, juice and water we go through and the caps thrown out with them, let's use them to make a difference :)

Lastly, I will need help transporting the plastic bottle caps to one of the many drop off locations every few weeks. There are heaps of locations, so I’m sure it won’t be out of your way if you volunteer to help. To see if you are near a location and can help out, follow this link https://envision.org.au/bottle-top-drop-off-locations/ If you would like to help, please email or talk to me so we can sort out a dropping off roster.

Thanks everyone!

Yarra Primary School

Mr Charalambous recently attended Yarra Primary School for a PD Day to teach the young students all about Astrophysics.   For the Astrophysics class, he taught grade 5 and 6's and had a lot of fun with them. They were really excited about the novel learning experience. It was for science week and part of our greater endeavour to bring quality science education to the broader community.

Herald Sun article

JMSS featured in a little article in the Herald Sun recently. Advertising schools that do things "a little differently" we were thrilled to be a part of it.  We are very proud of our school and jumped at the chance to be interviewed and photographed. Thank you to Sebastien Montemurro, Jennifer Li and our Regional Exchange student Rory van der Zand for taking part in the photo shoot.

Father's Day

Andrew Fuller is an author and clinical psychologist specialising in brains, learning and resilience.  He shared this with us and we thought it was good timing for Father's Day this Sunday.
