MAMMA MIA! THE MUSICAL

On the 10th September 2018 a group of 50 students went to see the musical Mamma Mia! The Musical in the city.  The show was amazing.  To put it simply, it's absolutely awesome.  Most of the actors were quite young, with a few exceptions, but everyone was extremely talented and all had incredible skills in singing and dancing.  The show received a standing ovation at the end, after 3 encores of some excellent songs.  One of the reviews (I read prior to going) suggested that people might "dance in the aisles", and trust me I wanted to.  The costumes were amazing, even some of the less bedazzled ones still stood out as being really well made and fit the characters perfectly.

I was talking after the show ended about how it was just a matinee and how amazing the evening shows would be.  If it was that good just as a matinee then the people seeing the evening shows are in for something amazing.  The actual theatre was packed, I don't think there was any chair left empty and it was quite a wait to get upstairs to our seats.  Interval was fairly uneventful and then BANG! the orchestra started the second half with a huge loud beginning song - scaring a lot of people around me.  I was holding my phone during interval and nearly dropped it on hearing that and getting a massive fright in the process!  In conclusion Mamma Mia! The Musical is incredible and I highly recommend seeing it.

On Wednesday the 12th of September, students of all ages and accompanying teachers made their way into the hustle and bustle of the city to view the musical theatre performance of Mamma Mia. A lunch stop at Melbourne Central, and a brisk walk to the theatre couldn’t contain our excitement as we awaited the professional performance. We sat amongst a packed audience, squirming with enthusiasm. And as the lights dimmed, and the introduction to the show began, we became immersed in the thrill of ‘Mamma Mia The Musical’. There were complex sets, dazzling costumes, acting at its finest and plenty of well-known ABBA songs to sing along to. There was plenty of laughing, utter stillness as we watched the musical in awe, and of course lots of singing and dancing! We all knew the lyrics of “Mamma Mia”, that had us nodding our heads along with the beat. “Dancing Queen” had us reminiscing the time the film was all the craze, and “Waterloo” even had some of us jumping out of our seats.

Mamma Mia was the captivating, hilarious and beautiful story we all knew and more, brought to life through the actors in-sync choreography and soaring voices. After the musical concluded, we made our way to the front of the theatre, still buzzing from the explosive finale. There, we had the chance to get our programs or tickets signed, and get photos taken with some of the cast members, who were kind enough to come outside. What a day! We began our journey back to Frankston by train followed by bus, facing some unexpected troubles with the busy trains. Being delayed an hour, although quite frustrating, became just another experience to add to a list for that day. I believe we can all say that the Wednesday in the city was definitely well spent! Getting the chance to watch a professional musical and learn a bit about the extents of musical theatre was a great experience and well worth it. Mamma Mia was magnificent!

SPORT

Mount Eliza has experienced yet another successful term in inter-school sporting competitions. Our students represented the school professionally and had the privilege of participating in their choice of hockey, basketball, table tennis and Futsal.  Participation across all year levels in sport has significantly increased and this is evident in our outcomes and results.  We have been able to enter as many teams, and sometimes more than the much bigger schools in our district which is a real credit to our PE staff, coaches and students.

The following teams were successful in winning the Southern Peninsula District Competitions in term 3: Year 8 Girls Futsal, Intermediate Boys Futsal, and Year 7 Girls Hockey. Unfortunately there is no further competition for the Futsal teams but we wish the year 7 girls hockey team all the best for their Southern Metropolitan Regional Final in late October.

VCAL PROJECT

This term, VCAL students have been responsible for refurbishing six community bikes located in the Mt Eliza Village. They have been able to design, paint and fix the bikes back to their original condition after many years of being exposed to the harsh weather conditions.  Next time you are walking around the Village, be sure to keep an eye out for them.

INSPIRED SENIOR VCAL STUDENT DONATES ART PIECE TO THE BRIARS

Brodie Dunn has been dedicating significant periods of class time this term developing a creative piece as part of his Personal Development community activity. Brodie presented his completed art piece to Joanne Fyfe (Briars Visitor information officer) this week and was a fantastic representative of the college in the process. Brodie has provided some insight (below) in relation to his inspiration for the painting.

I needed some inspiration for a painting so I decided to go for a walk at ‘The Briars’.  I thought a walk to the bird hide would be good and I knew it was a short walk.  Last famous words, because on this particular day works were on the normal walking track so it took quite a lot longer - the track went up and around and down.  I got lost at one stage and retracing my  steps I finally made it to the bird hide.  I took many photos along the way.   I have  to say the wetland wasn’t very wet because it must have been a dry winter.  I took quite a few photos from the bird hide and decided on the one that I ended up painting.  It was a challenge as I had a huge canvas but I think it reflects the nature and beauty of the environment.  We are very lucky on the Mornington Peninsula to live by such fantastic scenery
