Australian Classics

With over 150 years of history, our country has made its name on the international stage for being above average at sport. In this subject we will look at the sports that our country has dominated over since federation. Students will participate in:

  • Our only true indigenous game of AFL
  • Will look back to the period of Davis Cup domination by learning the skills of tennis
  • Look at the changes in skills from Test Match to T20 in the game of cricket
  • Developing the fundamentals of our most dominant female team the Diamonds with Netball
  • Play modified versions of the most popular game in the northern states – Rugby

American Sports

From the land of stars and stripes, hotdogs, popcorn and the highest paid athletes in the world, this subject looks at the sports that make America tick. Razzamattaz is what the USA is all about. Students will participate in:

  • America’s favourite past time in the game of Baseball
  • Learn to pass like Lebron and shoot 3 pointers like Curry with Basketball
  • Play modified versions of the game that stops the nation every Sunday in winter – NFL
  • Understand the fundamentals and movement patterns in the game of Lacrosse and see how these are used in other sports

European Sports

With cold winters and warm summers, no other continent has the variety of sports as the continent of Europe. With soccer being a staple of all countries, many games have been created using this sport as its base. Indoor sports thrive in the cold winter months, whilst getting outdoors when it is warm means that the Europeans are able to love their sport all year round. Students will participate in:

  • From the Real Madrid to Manchester United – soccer is the world game
  • Played with the hands instead of the feet, yet using many similar tactics - handball
  • Stick skills and building attack from the defence are the key in hockey
  • The ultimate team game where no one can hit the ball twice in a row. Set, spike and dig your way to a winning position in volleyball
  • All the way from St Andrews in Scotland comes the game of golf

Fitness for fun

Looking at your general fitness and well being, this subject aims to provide you with the skills to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Not everyone wants to play team sports, but we all want to be active in life. Students will participate in:

 

  • You don’t have to be a gym junkie to get stronger. Complete fitness circuits to improve strength instead
  • Be at one with yourself by undertaking zumba, pilates and yoga to improve your flexibility and mental health
  • Play minor games which are non invasive or competitive by nature for fun
  • Why run when you can walk? Endurance training can be done with not just running, you can walk and talk with your friends and get fitness benefits as well.

Hoop Time

Spend all your time watching the NBA and NBL? So you love basketball? Dream of being like Ben Simmons? This is the subject for you. Basketball and only basketball, this subject looks to improve your overall skills so it takes your game to the next level. We look at how the game is played at the highest level and how you can implement it in your own game. In this subject you will:

  • Be able to move around the court like Matt Delevadova through undertaking basketball specific fitness
  • Be the point guard and learn how to call and execute different offensive plays
  • Can you make the buzzer beater shot? Learning to shoot with correct technique that won’t fail you
  • Defence is the best form of offence – learn to be a better defensive player by having the correct positioning on the court at all times

 

Specifically Soccer

Don’t want to be caught offside? Need those extra sessions at school so that your game on the weekend can get even better? Specifically soccer it is. Like Lionel Messi, you will work on your game in every class, looking at your deficiencies and working on them to make you a more complete player. In this subject you will:

  • Work on your ball skills through the use of small sided games like Barcelona’s favourite, ticky tacky
  • Attack the ball in the box and head it in the back of the net like Tim Cahill
  • What tactics work when - Do we park the bus and defend or attack and outscore with 3 forwards? Look at when different tactics are used against different opposition
  • Be able to combine the speed required to beat your man to the ball and also be able to play a full 90 minutes
