Extend is 2 sessions per week where students work in vertical groups (Years 8 &9).
The Stock Market Game
Students learn about investing and the Sharemarket and put into practice what they are learning by playing the Sharemarket Game. Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in 220 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market so this is as close to real life share trading as you can get. Students will:
· Develop their knowledge of the sharemarket
· Learn how to research companies
· Discover the importance of wise investment decisions
· Gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events
· Begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.
Psychology
Students will investigate human thoughts, emotions and behaviours using the scientific approach. The students will explore some of the most influential ideas and theorist in the science of Psychology. Students explore perception, optical illusions, attention and the brain, dreaming, emotions, attraction, body language and sport psychology. Students will use the scientific process and ethical considerations in order to design and investigate a psychological theory they find interesting by conducting an inquiry into that theory. This inquiry (Empirical Research Activity –ERA) will have multiple components where students will run an ethically approved experiment to understand more about the human psyche to present their findings.
Permaculture
Students undertaking permaculture will be exposed to a range of local and global issues and learn to act towards improvment of these problems by relying on renewable resources and a self-sustaining ecosystem. Students will be guided in determining areas for improvement around the school and local community and they will take actions in order to work in teams collaboratively to create and develop their own projects in sustainability, according to the identified needs in the school and local community. Students will effectively communicate these issues to their peers at school and to members of the local community along with their alternative solutions for these needs. As socially and environmentally aware citizens, students will create particular goals and work towards these goals by measuring the success of their own actions.
Student Peer Coaching
The focus of the Student Leadership and Peer Coaching Extend Elective is to discover and build each student’s personal and social capabilities by recognizing their impact on others as a peer leader and coach. There will be opportunities for student leaders to put theory into practice while working with individual students across Years Prep – 4
The course outline will provide students with the opportunity to :
- understand the impact of their emotions on others
- develop their adaptability and resilience when working in challenging situations
- discover how relationships work
- demonstrate an ability to collaborate to allow for achievement in themselves and others
Art Attack
The focus of Art Attack is to develop an understanding of how different elements of art can be used to create artwork. The students will investigate the elements including line, shape, form, colour, value, texture and space to create individual artworks. Students will have the opportunity to:
- plan and make their art works in response to exploration of techniques, technologies and
- use different materials, techniques, processes, visual conventions and technologies to express ideas and convey meaning in their artworks
- display artwork and discuss the meaning of different artists work
Tool Box Tradies
Run in conjunction with ONTECC students develop their understanding and experience of working trades. Students will meet with experts in apprenticeship training and applications and learn about Occupational Health and Safety requirements in the trade industry. They will then go off site to participate in building and construction as well as automotive at ONTECC. Please note there is an additional charge of $250 for this subject and students are expected to provide suitable work pants.
8/9 Production
Costume! Lights! Positions! 8/9 Production is dedicated to introducing and developing students’ Dramatic and Theatre skills. Students will begin by developing their understanding of the key concepts in drama. Students will work in groups to devise short dramatic performances. Students will work in various groups and arrangements throughout the semester, which will ask them to employ teamwork and negotiation skills, as well as encourage them to reflect on their creative choices. Furthermore, students will utilise techniques from Theatre Studies in order to respond to and present a performance based off a chosen script.
Debating
Reasoning, research and even public speaking skills are just some of the positives behind learning how to be a great debater. From planning your argument (even if you don’t agree with it) to choosing your words wisely, debating will help you take on whatever life chooses to throw at you. Students will undertake a program of learning to debate effectively. They will form teams and begin by engaging in school based competition. Students will then participate in Debaters Association of Victoria schools competition.
Community News
With the decline of print and single specialty jobs, comes a rise of digital and multimedia journalism careers. Learning such skills as photography, audio-visual recording, writing for the web, social media and website design, in addition to traditional journalism proficiencies, will prove very valuable. Students will work on a range of news sharing formats for the community both within and outside the school. This may include editing ‘Inspire’, weekly Lakes TV show etc.
AUSLAN
Students can build on their previous knowledge of AUSLAN by engaging in activities including translating English to AUSLAN, finger spelling words and greetings. Students will learn a range of signs and engage into conversations with others. By participating in this subject students will learn how to communicate with members of the Deaf community.
