Nossal's International Cricket Report
On Tuesday October 3, Nossal High school played its first ever inter school match of cricket on our new oval, which we must now refer to as the NCG – the Nossal Cricket Ground. An auspicious occasion it was too as the opposition was a school from New Zealand, The John McGlashan College from Dunedin. The students visiting from New Zealand were in Melbourne to play four matches and other opponents included Wesley College and Melbourne Grammar.
October, as we all know, is known for its changeable weather conditions but Melbourne turned on an absolute belter for the match. It was a perfect sunny day, sitting at around 23 degrees for most of the day. The match was a 50 over per side match and we did very well to restrict the John McGlashan side to 190 runs from their allocated overs (We knew that in their first match they had scored 287 from their 50 overs).
We started brightly and had 39 from 5 overs before we had the first of four run outs for our innings. In the end we lost too many wickets too quickly and were all out for 162, some 29 runs short of our target, but still with 5 overs in hand.
Putting the score aside it was a wonderful day. The staff from John McGlashan College were most appreciative of our hospitality and it was agreed that this could be the beginnings of a long-lasting tradition that would certainly involve John McGlashan visiting again, but could involve a representative team from Nossal visiting New Zealand.
