Acting Principal's News

Dear Armadale Community,

As the term draws to a close, we would like to acknowledge your commitment in working with us to make learning at our school amazing! We conducted learning walks today and visited several classes and it was fantastic to see teachers’ planning in action. Stuart Andrews was part of these walks as he is our Student Education Improvement Leader and was here to see how we are progressing with our Annual Improvement Plan. He was extremely complimentary on what he saw and wanted us to acknowledge the great work our teachers and students are doing.

ASSEMBLY

Our Preps hosted their first assembly on Tuesday. It was wonderful to see our young learners take on the challenge and stand in front of a huge audience. We were treated to a Prep J’s version of ‘We will Rock You’. Prep P shared their version of My Many Coloured by Days Dr Seuss and Prep A shared their creative talents through their art work. The theme for Assembly was ‘Feelings and Emotions’ and one of my many highlights was the creation of words to share a new feeling. Willow in Prep A created the word ‘commotious’ which was created to describe ALL the feelings together. Aoife gave word ‘rainbow’ a new meaning and she used to to describe two feelings coming together.

Please join us for our final assembly for the term. This will be on the last Tuesday of the term in the MPC at 9am.

PLAYGROUND UPDATE

The planter boxed were delivered today and demolition is scheduled for Monday. We have been liaising with Steve, who is managing the landscaping and he assured us that they will be completing the demolition works next week.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTS

You will be able to access your child’s semester report through COMPASS. These are expected to be released next Thursday. A message will be sent to notify you when these reports can be accessed.

The report will have a table that informs you of your child’s progress based on the curriculum. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

This section will show you graphically where your child sits on the learning continuum. The yellow bar represents the expected level of achievement for your child.

The classroom teacher will also write a general comment addressing how your child demonstrates the following values as a learner:

relationships, respect, responsibility, resilience and reflection.

LEARNING CONTINUUMS

This is a main component of the report and can be a little challenging to understand. The aim of the continuum is to specify where each child is at in their learning journey. This is not as simple as aligning the year level of the child to the curriculum level.

As teachers and educators, it is our role to know exactly where each child is on the learning continuum and where we need to take them next. In a ‘straight’ grade (i.e. Year 1 class), we cannot simply offer children learning experiences that aim to develop Level 1 skills and knowledge. We are skilful educators and need to support all our learners wherever they are on the learning continuum. It is expected that a straight grade will yield children that span across several levels on the learning continuum.

The learning continuums for English and Maths specify what the dot means in the table above and the skills and knowledge your child will be working on next. The highlighted section indicates where you child sits on the learning continuum.

Please note that your child’s report will only show a section of each continuum. Knowledge and skills have been unpacked for you so that you know where your child is at and what they will be working towards

SPECIALIST REPORT

Your child’s report will also include a graphic indication of where they are on each of the learning continuums related to:

  • The Arts (Visual Arts & Music)
  • Physical Education
  • LOTE - Italian

Each specialist teacher has written a comment for every child.

Please take the time to celebrate with your child their achievements and our teachers will be supporting and guiding your child to move along the continuums in the next 6 months.
