We are at the very busy & important time of the year with our Pathways Evening, Course Counselling and Subject Selections taking place early next term. We encourage you to attend these important events with your child. At home you can support your teen choose their subjects by exploring subject offerings in the WHC College Handbook, discussing potential pathways and considering enjoyment, success, and aspirations.

Enjoyment

  • Encourage your child to select subjects they will enjoy.
  • They are more likely to put in their full effort when they like what they are learning.

Success

  • When your child gives their best effort they are more likely to do well.
  • If your child is choosing a subject because it is a prerequisite, encourage them to reflect on whether their previous learning indicates they are likely to experience success.

Aspirations

  • If your child is unsure about their future pathway, encourage them to choose a balanced timetable with subjects that will keep the most options open.
  • If they have some idea of their direction, they will need to know which school subjects are prerequisites for the VET (TAFE) and/or Higher Education (university) courses they're interested in. If you need further direction or advice get in touch with the College Pathways Leader – Ms Loe.
  • Even if a subject isn't a prerequisite, encourage your child to consider how it could support their preferred pathway. For example, Biology isn't usually a prerequisite for Medicine or Nursing,  however, what they learn in it will be advantageous if they want to study or work in a health-related field.

For Year 12 students the upcoming holidays are a perfect opportunity to explore tertiary institutions either online or in person as they host their 2023 Open Days. The attached guide will give you a rundown of what is on offer.

Alumni

Our third annual Careers Ambassador Panel has helped our Year 10 students learn about a diverse range of careers on Tuesday 6 June.

We were joined by Desiree MacDonald from Victoria Police (Class of 2002); Rob McHenry, engineering lecturer at Deakin University (Class of 2003); paramedic Georgie O'Keefe (Class of 2014); and WHC mental health practitioner Jordy Morgan, who all spoke about their career pathways and their jobs.

We started the session with a panel Q&A followed by break-out groups, with the panellists talking about their school days, what their job entails, the range of jobs available in their industry, the school subjects and post-school pathways students could take to enter the industry.

Some of the common themes that students took away from the speakers included: the importance of good communication skills, choosing a pathway that you'll enjoy, and that your career pathway can change over time.

It was a great session for the students to learn about a variety of careers, with Year 11 subject selections not far away. Thank you to Georgie, Rob, Desiree and Jordy for making the time to help our Year 10s!
